RAIN SPOILS ST.JOHN’S TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Only Twelve Matches Were Finished Rain marred the opening of the St. John’s Tennis Club’s annual hard court tournament yesterday. Heavy overnight rain left pools of water on the courts and start of play was delayed until 11.30 a.m. Further heavy rain set in at 1.30 p.m. and play was abandoned for the day. Only nine matches were finished in the men's singles and the favoured players Mahoney, Rountree, Mclntyre and Bristol were all successful. The other prominent, players, J. McKenzie and O. B. Welsh drew byes. Mclntyre had a keen tussle with the veteran R. Perkins and it was not until the third set that the winner gained the upper hand. Blackmore’s powerful service enabled him to win seven games in his match with Rountree but the winner was more consistent and appeared to be playing within himself. The leading junior player. Miss J. Everett, showed good form to beat Mrs. Tonga. Another prominent junior Miss P. Nettleton .also played well to win her match in the women’s singles. Results: — MEN’S SINGLES. First round: G. Bristol beat P. Burke 6-2, 6-1; M. Springer beat R. Aubrey 6-2, 6-4: M. Rountree beat D. Blackmore 6-3, 6-4; K. Mahoney beat J. Couchman 6-1, 6-1; M. Lampe beat I. McGrail 6-4, 6-0; N. Mclntyre beat R. Perkins 6-4, 4-6, 6-2; V. Trower beat I. Rolls 6-3, 5-6, 6-2; G. Montgomerie beat T. Major 6-0, 6-3; G. Hakaria beat W. Ross 6-4, 6-1. WOMEN’S SINGLES. First round: Miss J. Everett beat Mrs. D. Tonga 5-6, 6-4, 6-2; Miss P. Nettleton beat Miss V. Papworth 6-0, 6-1; Mrs. Lawrence beat Mrs. J. Wilson 6-2, 6-0.
