Wanganui Churches Hold Special Good Friday Services
Special services were held in Wanganui city and suburban churches yesterday. The main theme of the services was the Passion and death of Christ on the Cross.
A large congregation attended the three hours’ devotion in Christ Church yesterday afternoon The devotion was conducted by Archdeacon H. W. Monaghan, vicar of All Saints’ Church, Palmerston North. Yesterday morning, at. 8 o’clock, the Litany and Ante-Communion Service was held. Last night an evening service took place. At St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church a United Communion Service for the Ingestre Street Baptist, Trinity Methodist and St. Paul's Churches was held A packed church heard the service conducted by the Rev. N. R Wood. The Narrative of the Passion was given by the Rev. F. J. Parker. The Sacrament of Holy Communion was administered by Rev. A. C McLean. St Mary's Catholic Church, Victoria Avenue, was crowded yesterday morning for the Mass of Presanctification. Stations of the Cross and the Adoration of the Cross were held in the afternoon. Two special services were held in the Baptist. Church to mark the Easter season. At the morning service a play reading of various Scripture scenes was given. The play was produced by Mr Arthur K. Smith, of Wanganui. At the evening service an augmented choir sang Stainers’ cantata, “The Crucifixion.” The conductor was Miss Esme Smith and the soloists were Messrs. H. E. Tipper and Mr. D. Blight. Special Good Friday services were held in all other Wanganui churches. Tomorrow, Easter Sunday, will also be a day of special significance in Wanganui churches After the solemnities of Good Friday it will be a day of rejoicing because of the Resurrection of Christ.
