NEW DIRECTOR OF BROADCASTING
Mr. W. Yates To Succeed Professor Shelley
WELLINTON, Last Night (PA).— The Minister of Broadcasting (Mr Jones) announced today that Professor Shelley is to retire from the position of Director of Broadcasting. The Minister said that during his 13 years as director Professor Shelley had steered broadcasting through a difficult peric-d in its development in New Zs>:and. J/is foresight and judgment enabled many problems encountered by other broadcasting organisations to be r/uccessfully overcome until New Ze/iland now possesses a broadcasting organisation held in high esteem. Mr. Jones added: “In addition to his activities in the broadcasting field, Professor Shelley has built up an impressive record of achievements in.
the cultural life of the community. As first Professor of Education in New Zealand he exercised considerable influence in educational theory and practice. He was one of the originators of what is now the Country Library Service, and was intimately concerned with the activities of the Workers’ Education Association and initiated the summer school movement in New Zealand. “The Government has decided that Mr. William Yates, who has been Assistant Director of Broadcasting for the past five years, will succeed Professor Shelley as Director of Broadcasting. Mr. Yates has had a wide and varied experience in broadcasting. He has occupied a number of important positions in the Broadcasting Service since he joined it in 1934. Recently Mr. Yates returned from a visit to England, Canada, and the United States, where he has been studying up-to-date methods of broadcasting administration and overseas trends in broadcasting techniques.”
