AUSTRALIAN CABLE RECALLS TAIHAPE MAN'S GOOD FORTUNE

TAIHAPE, Last Night (O.C.I—A cabled item in Monday’s newspapers stating that “one of Australia's leading racing identities.” Mr. Walter Devon, has announced he will retire from racing, recalls an occasion which will live long in the memories of Taihape people. On Tuesday, November 3. 1936, Wotan, a racehorse owned by Smith Bros., Mangaweka, which had shown no particular prominence at New Zealand meetings, came to light with a great finishing burst and won the Melbourne Cup, to bring fortune to his owners and to Mr. Devon, who held a ticket in the Australian lottery.

Mr. Devon, now 64, had then resided in the Taihape district for about 1(1 years and for most of that time had been employed as a rabbiter and later as a shepherd by Messrs. Duncan and Tilley, at Springvale Station. At the time of his good fortune, Mr. Devon was in the employ of Mr. R. H. Lowry.

Richer by £50,000, Mr. Devon said he supposed racing would get most of the money back.
