Tokomaru Cricket Club Farewells Harry Cave
Making his last appearance before his departure with the New Zealand cricket team on the Dominion Monarch, which sails for England on Sat- ! urday next, H. B. Cave was given a ' presentation by the Tokomaru Coun- i try Cricket Club, founded before the 1 First World War by an elder genera- ' lion of Caves. The game between Tokomaru and Wanganui Veterans was inconclusive. It was played on a matting wicket on Mr. E. F. Caseley’s paddock. Brunswick, in a high wind which dislodged , i the bails that frequently that they ; were removed for a period. Highlights of an enjoyable day ■ were: Big hitting by H. B. Cave (49) and D. Beard (44), main contributors: to the home side’s tally of 149; H. F. I Low’s nine wickets for 44 and A. G. Davidson’s rigorous 36 for Veterans, skippered by the one-time Wanganui representative player, G. Orr; an unbeaten, if entertaining, stand by the Veterans' tail, despite the extension of Maying lime, the last wicket being intact at stumps with lhe tally at 117; lhe sumptuous fare provided by the Tokomaru womenfolk at lunch and tea at the homestead of Mr. and Mrs. E. Clutiprbuck: and the speech with which Mr. J. Currie prefaced tlie presentation of a fountain pen and pencil to Harry Cave, reviewing enteifainingly tb° history of the Tokomaru Club over the years. Mr. Orr joined tho visitors in the congratulations extended by Mr. Currie to H. P. Cave and returned thanks I for Ibe game and the hospitality. "I j hope 1 shall be able to justify your hopes,’’ said Hrry Cave in acknowledging the presentation and remarks.
