Riding Accounts Out Of Date In Opinion Of Rangitikei County

That this county is of the opinion that separate riding accounts are out of date” was the text of a motion passed at Thursday’s meeting of the Rangitikei County Council.

The motion, which was moved by Cr. H. G. Stewart and seconded by Cr. V. Smith, was carried unanimously. "I am inclined to think that we sometimes take too narrow a view of these matters,” said the chairman (Mr. K. W. Dalrymple). "At least I am sure the catchment board does. New Zealand is only a small spot on the earth.”

The county clerk (Mr. F. L. Nicol) said that once a county council had abolished its riding accounts they could not be re-opened. Stating that he had voted against amalgamation of the riding accounts, Cr. A. S. Coleman said he really thought the council was very much better off when everyone was looking after the affairs of his own riding. However, he was going to support the motion.

Cr. J. R. L. Hammond said that he believed the county’s opinion would not carry much weight as much depended on local conditions. The southern ridings of the Rangitikei County had lost much at the time the riding accounts were abolised but he did not think the county under today’s conditions could revert to riding accounts.
