Burglary At Home Of Mayor Of Auckland
AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.) —Taking advantage of the fact that the Mayor (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) and Mrs. Allum were attending a civic reception to Mr. Anthony Eden in the Town Hall, burglars entered his home at Herne Bay on Thursday night. They stole £l7, one sovereign which was a keepsake, and a wristlet watch. The Allums left their home before 7.30 p.m. and did not return until about 10.30 p.m. They found several of the rooms in disorder. Evidence of a hurried search was given by the way in which drawers had been pulled out #nd the contents scattered.
Mr. Allum said the burglary was committed on one of the few occasions on which his house had been left empty.
The Allums were robbed of about £3OO worth of jewellery in similar circumstances on the night of June 19, 1946. On that occasion they were attending a civic reception in the Town Hall to the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C. In addition to jewels, which were never recovered, about £l5 was taken.
