Australian Bowlers Beaten. The Australian bowlers were defeated yesterday 119 to 162 by Southland in a match at Invercargill which, at the visitors’ request, was extended to 25 heads. (P.A.).

Girls’ Marching Teams, Five girls’ marching teams from Wanganui will take part in the New Zealand marching championships at Palmerston North conducted by the N.Z. Marching Union. The teams arc Relax, Fusiliers, United, Troubadours and The Guards. Tomorrow morning the nominees for the New Zealand representative team to visit Australia will be inspected by Major V. McCullough, who will select the team. Theft of Suitcases.

Three instances of suitcases being removed from rooms in private hotels in Wanganui have been reported to the police. In each case the suitcase and contents have not been recovered and inquiries are being prosecuted by the police. In the meantime, however, lodgers in hotels will no doubt take care to lock their rooms during their absence.

Bicycle out of Control. When his bicycle became out of control while he was cycling down Guyton Street toward the river bank yesterday, lan Henderson, aged 15 years, of Somme Parade, collided with a verandah pole at the intersection of Bell Street. He was taken to the Wanganui Public Hospital by ambulance and is reported to be suffering from a query fracture of the left thigh.

Register of Ministers. Ministers in New Zealand who can perform the marriage ceremony under the Marriage Act, 1908, number 2494, according to a list just published. The list covers 64 churches, sects or religious bodies and included among' the persons listed are five archbishops, 10 bishops, 11 monsignors, oqe Salvation Army Commissioner, 31 women, one woman member cf the Legislative Council (Mrs. M. M. Dreaver), a Maori member of Parliament (Mr. Matiu Ratana) and various pastors and elders.

Brass Bands to Parade. The Wanganui Garrison Band and the Queen Alexandra’s Band will make their final appearance at Cook’s Gardens tomorrow before they take part in the New Zealand brass bands’ contest at Auckland. The two bands will play the contest music, including the quickstep and the test selections and will be assisted by girls’ marching teams. The two bands will leave Wanganui by the 5.10 p.m. train foi Marton next Friday to catch the Auckland express. Before tjieir departure they will play down the Avenue to the railway station.

Sarjeant Gallery Lighting. The Sarjeant Gallery is likely to have fluorescent lighting installed in the near future. It was stated by Cr. G. P. Hawkins* chairman of the Gallery Committee, at the opening < the Wanganui Arts Society’s exhibition yesterday afternoon, that the city engineer (Mr. L. F. Row) is going into the question of the estimated cost of the installation. Provided the electric lighting situation is satisfactory it is also hoped to have the Gallery floodlit from the outside. Mr. T. L. Sperring, chairman of the Wanganui Arts and Crafts Society, said it would be all to the good to have the proposed lighting installed.

Skeletons at Patea. Two more human skeletons have been unearthed by shifting sands at the Patea golf links, where a skeleton, believed to be that of a soldier from a regiment quartered in the vicinity at the time of the Maori wars, was found. One of the latest two skeletons is believed to be that of a woman. A Patea resident has informed th* police that he remembers being told that there was a cemetery at this spot, and that it was raised about 20 years before he went to Patea. Both skeletons are well preserved. Around the neck ofthat of the woman was a black silk scarf and that of the man was wrapped in a check patterned rug. The remains are being cared for by the police and projected plans are in hand for an examination of the area for further remains with a view to their re-intenment.
