Holding Up Of Road Construction Opposed By County Council

“If the contract had been let to a i private contractor the work would have been completed by now and at a much lower cost," said Cr. A. S. Coleman at Thursday's meeting of the 1 Rangitikei County Council, when re- . (erring to the slow progress on the reconstruction of the main road to Hunterville. The council took exception to the action of the Ministry of Works in reducing votes for road works after they had been approved and during the working season. | Members complained that road ' works were being held up while the , 1 weather was favourable. It was con- ! sidered likely that complaints would : be received from ratepayers regardI ing the condition of their roads dur- , I ing the winter months as a conse- ; quence. i Advice was received from the Min- ; ■ istry of Works that the vote of £5OOO '• for the Curl's Bridge-Upper Tutaenui | road for the current year had been reduced to £3700, and that the vote for ■ tlie Bonny Glen-Norwood Corner highway had been reduced by £3OOO to £2500. j “Road work is being held up all over the country. What is the rea-' son?” asked Cr. Coleman. Councillors: Shortage of money. Another councillor contended that the Ministry of Works had bought too heavily of bitumen. Councillors instanced a tapering off of highway construction work during recent months, when full advantage j should be taken of the favourable I weather. ' ONLY WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TO BE PLAYED TODAY.
