MOVE TO NATIONALISE U.K. SHIPBUILDING
LONDON, Jan. 17 (Rccd. 7.10 pm). The Executive Council of the Confederation of Engineering and Shipbuilding Union, which has a membership of nearly three million, decided to recommend to the Government that the British shipbuilding and repairing industry should be nationalised. The executive was divided on whether or not proposals for State control of shipbuilding should be included in the Labour Party’s general election programme, but a majority is in favour of this being done without further delay. The executive also approved in principle of State ownership of shipping, but decided that this was primarily a matter for the Seamen’s Union.
