VICTORY FOR TENOR ROYAL IN MAIN PAHIATUA EVENT

Only twelfth in a field of seventeen within four furlongs of the finish of the President’s Handicap on Saturday. Tenor Hoyal made a brilliant and sustained run which carried him to as comfortable a win as he had registered a fortnight earlier in the Marton Cup. The President's Handicap was the feature event on the concluding day of the Pahiatua Pacing Club's meeting at Woodville and provided one of the several interesting finishes staged during the day before a large attendance.

The open sprint, the Newmarket Handicap, attracted a small held of eight, but the finish was a desperate one, Autoshine gaining a head victory in the last stride over the hot favourite Da Vinci. Leyma won the Rodney Memorial Hack Handicap, which carried a trophy in memory of one of the stalwarts of the club’s earlier days. Weather conditions were good after a rather unpromising morning, and the track was in good order and fast. The totalisator turnover was £48,400, compared with £42,660 on January 31 last year, and the aggregate for the meeting was £98,562, as against £94,579 10s last year, the increase being just short of £4OOOThe only successful favourites were Phalamint in th e Hamua Hack and Leyma in the Rodney Memorial Hack, but Autoshine’s success in the open sprint was the only setback for backers. W. H. Hume, Trentham (Palissy and Vitesse) and T. L. Jennings, (Opaki) (The Laird and Leyma) brought off doubles with their charges

EASY FOR TENOR ROYAL Though Tenor Royal had a good deal of leeway to make up over the concluding stages of the President’s Handicap, the Royal Chief gelding scored a impressive win. Lord Phrosa and Kippo led qut of the straight from Beau Bijou, Balcherrie, Clyde Bridge, The Denbigh and Indian Sky (wide out), with Beguile next and Tenor Royal and Embronta at the j rear Lord Phrosa and Kippo were • some four lengths clear as the field ran across the top, with Beau Bijou, Embrolita and Clyde Bridge next and Tenor Royal making a forward move. Lord Phrosa dropped out at the straight entrance and Tenor Royal quickly ran up to Kippo, with Frying I Bridge, Sly Robin and Culloden Moor’ improving . their positions. Tenor Royal ran away from the rest over the final stages to win by two lengths from Kippo, who hung on to beat the fast-finishing Sly Robin by a neck for second. Lord Phrosa was a fair fourth,. ahead of Flying Bridge, Culloden Moor, Beau Bijou, Fairhome and Embrolita. Sly Robin paid a double-figure dividend. AUTOSHINE SURPRISES Da Vinci carried nearly half the win investments in the Newmarket Handicap and was just a trifle unlucky to be touched off by Autoshine at double figures, in the last few strides- Petr e Mar and Demure led early from King of Quiz, Royal Cambria and Autoshine, with Da Vinci and Sorrel at the rear. Ring of Quiz took over at the three furlongs and led into th e straight from Demure, Da Vinci (outside), Sorrel and Autoshine (rails). A furlong from home Da Vinci .ran up to Demure, but over the last 50 yards Autoshine flashed up on the inside to gain a half-head decision over Da Vinci, with Demure only a nose away, third. Almost in line was King of Quiz, with Sorrel and Tranquil Gold next.

LEYMA WINS HANDILY Favourite for the Rodney Memorial Hack, Leyma won handily after being well placed throughout. At the six furlongs Lord Boswells held command from Battle On and Leyma, with Foxtonian, Kentucky Flight, Gold Frock, Hormond and Kumari next in order. Belle Reine then ran up smartly to lead at the five furlongs, but Maelstrom assumed command at the three furlongs, to be accompanied by Hormond into the straight, with Leyma, Kumari and Foxtonian in close attendance. Leyma took the lead a furlong from home and held on to win by a short neck from Hormond. Kentucky Flight was a length and a-half away, third, just ahead of Foxtonian, and then came Kumari, Action, Lord Boswells and Pippin.

PALISSY NARROWLY Hard ridden over the final furlong to meet the determined challenge of Ivanhoe, Palissy won the Highweight Handicap by a narrow margin and returned quite a good dividend. After sharing the early lead with Surrender, Nepeta was in front of Ivanhoe and Surrender at the three, with Magnus Lux, Palissy, The Swagger, Elofa and Gold Lad following. Palissy moved up on the home turn and then Ivanhoe challenged, the pair drawing away from the field to stage a fighting finish. Elofa came home well from several places back for third, and then came Nepeta, Lady’s Man and Sir Kenart. PHALAMINT WINS WELL Alter being in seventh place as the Hamua Hack Handicap field entered the straight, Phalamint made a fine run along the rails to win by half a length from Arvadale, which finished fast wide out on the course. Sandalwood. prominent always, stuck on to get third money, a neck away from the second horse, and Lackamor, Blue Spec, Jet Plane and Quartz were almost in ine with the third horse. WIN FOR CORONACH COLT The Coronach colt The Laird, trained at Opaki, scored a comfortable win in the Nursery Handicap, with the hot favourite, Vivere, in second place. Rashid Ali led to the straight, followed by Vivere, The Laird, Caterina, Foxrelio and Louisville. Once in line for the judge The Laird ran to the front and won comfortably by four lengths from Vivere, who just as easily beat Rashid Ali- Louisville was a fair fourth, ahead of Foxrelio and Caterina. NOVICE STAKES DIVISIONS Divisions were required in the Second Novice Stakes. Reward scored easily in the first, with Sentimental just as comfortable a winner in the second. Reward soon assumed the lead in the first division, and was followed into the straight by Jolly Robin, Miss Majesty, Golden Girl and Fealty. In th< run home nothing could get near

Reward, who won by two lengths, with Jolly Robin holding off Fealty by a neck for second. Then came On Probation (who was slow away) and Golden Girl. Haughty Boy jumped out smartly in the second division and led from j Rhodesian Gold and Sentimental, but the last-named ran up to challenge 1 Haughty Boy crossing the top. Reach--1 ing the straight ahead of Haughty Boy, Rhodesian Gold and Closeburn, I Sentimental held on to win by two I lengths from Rhodesian Gold, who beat Closeburn by a head, with Miss j Trivalve a neck away. Miss Broie- , fort and Atomic Energy wer e next to • finish. i BROUGHTON WINS ON VITESSE ' Carrying the same colours as the j Highweight winner, Vitesse won the ! concluding event in a spirited finish, : and gave Broughton his only win on I the day. After allowing Martianair I to make the pace for a furlong, Vi- ' tesse held command from Martianair, Show Mist, Determination, Clare’s Pal, Rival Star and Treneere. Clare’s Pal joined Vitesse crossing the top, with Determination and Treneere next, and the leading pair were followed into the straight by Brookland, Silver Mascot and Treneere. Vitesse held command in the final furlong and lasted long enough to win by half a length from Brookland, who beat Tre- ' neer e by half a head for second.
