Wanganui Beats Wellington In An Athletic Contest

Inter-Club Banner, Bramwell Shield And Falconer Cup Were Won

Ah athletic contest between Wellington and Wanganui was decided at Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui, on Saturday night. Open cycling events were also decided. The inter-club athletic banner was won by Wanganui, the home club scoring 2615 points against the visitors’ 1015. At an earlier meeting, held at Wellington on December 4, Wanganui were also victors by 119 to 92. Wanganui thus wins the club banner with a total of 3805 points. Wellington secured 1935. Wanganui won the Bramwell Shield for the senior relay and the Falconer Cup for the sprints. Mi'-s P. Fletcher, of Wellington, equalled the New Zealand record for the women's 80 metres hurdles. Her time was 12secs. However, no record will be applied for. CLOSE FINISHES.

The majority of the sprint races resulted in close finishes. P. Henderson gained a double in winning the 100 and 220 yards Senior A. However, he was hard pressed by the promising young Wanganui D. Hawke, in the 100 yards. In the Senior B events the former schoolboy star of the Wanganui Technical College, H. Brewer, was successful in the 100, 220 and 440 yards. In the 440 he ran a waiting race until he beached the straight entrance, where he streaked away for an excellent win, I. Perigo, the local runner, was a class above his opponents in the Junior A sprints. In the Senior A 440yds, D. Rasmussen appeared done when there were about 100 yards to go, but he staged a good recovery to win comfortably. G. James, running in the outside lane in the junior 440, led into the straight and held on to win in a time which equalled that of the senior A. C. O’Donnell won the junior mile in the good time of 4min. 53.25ec. Possessing a free and easy style he took the lead from the start, and running effortlessly, won by 400 yards. He was the most impressive athlete at the meeting. O'Donnell is handicapped in that there is no local junior runner who can extend him. Keen and intensive competition would make this boy into a miler above the ordinary. In the senior mile, the visitor, M. Brown, sat on the heels of the pacemaker, and with 220 yards to go, he unwound a powerful sprint which gave him a wonderful win. R. Donaldson showed sound judgment to win the junior 880yds. In the senior event the Wellington runner, E. Couchman and C. Cometti, gained first and second placings respectively from R. Burbush In a spirited finish. The unavoidable absence of S. McKenzie (Wanganui)) the West Coast (N. 1. champion robbed the senior 440 and 880 events of much interest. ALL-ROUND ATHLETE. K. Dunbar (Wanganui) enjoyed another successful meeting. This allround athlete in the senior class won the javelin, high jump, 120yds. hurdles, shot putt, long jump, second in the discus and he secured third place in the senior B 100yds. The winner of the discus was J. Morgan, the prominent Wanganui athletic coach and a former British Empire Games representative The promising Wanganui junior, J. Mutimer, displayed good form in the field events. P. Young (Wellington) was the best high jumper at the meeting. The keenness of the junior competitors was particularly noticeable, both in the number of events in which they participated and in their zestful approach to these events. Highlight of the women’s events was the brilliant exhibition of hurdling by Miss P. Fletcher (Wellington) who won the 80 metres hurdles. This athlete is one of the country’s foremost hurdlers. Showing perfect timing and co-ordination, her excellent display was appreciated by the public. Miss P. Montague, the noted Wanganui sprinter, won the 7a, 100 and 220yds. events. In the two shorter events she started slowly but finished staongly. Miss Montague capped these good performances by winning the high jump and the long jump.

High jump (senior): K. Dunbar (Wang.) 1, W. Stewart (Wang.) 2, C. Commetti (Wgton.) 3; height, sft. 3in. Junior: D. Young (Wgton) 1, J Mutimer (Wang.) 2, R. Mosen (Wang.) 3; height, sft. 35in.

Shot putt (senior): K. Dunbar (Wang.) 1, W. Stewart (Wang.) 2, R. McPhun (Wang.) 3; distance, 29ft. 44in. Junior: J. Griffith (Wgton.) 1, H. Limpus (Wgton) 2, D. Young (Wgton) and G. James Wang.) equal 3; distance, 37ft. 4in.

Wanganui women monopolised the field events. Miss V. Robertson won the discus and javelin event. In all, Misses P. Montague and E. Webby each competed in eight events, and it was the marked superiority, both in number and performance, of the Wanganui women which contributed largely to the club’s success.

Wanganui won the three relay events by comfortable margins. In the quarter-mile junior relay the home team led all the way to win by 20 yards. In the women’s quartermile relay, Wanganui were behind at the first 110 yards, but a poor change over by the visitors lost them the a> vantage and the local team eventually won by 15 yards. In the halfmile senior relay, Henderson gave his team a good start, and at the change over Wanganui were leading by 15 yards. Hawke increased the margin to 20yds. and steady running by Rasmussen and Brewer gave Wanganui a won by 35 yards. F, Clinton won the flve-mile cycle invitation scratch race with a brilliant finish, but his performance wa overshadowed b; the excellent riding of G. Wakeley, who won two events. In the final of the quarter-mile cycle, R. Hessey was m a commanding position at'the straight entrance, but Wakeley finished strongly to gain a well merited win. G. Wakeley also won the two-mile cycle A grade, off 30 yards. Catching the front-markers with two laps to go, he obtained a good position. However, in the back straight, during the final lap he appeared to be blocked in, but with a brilliant burst he gained the lead with about 90 yards to go and cleared out from the remainder and won comfortably. W. Main rode a strong race to gain first placing in the two-mile B grade. In the one mile handicap final W. Main and M. Harvey, the limit men, teamed well and the back-markers were unable to catch them. Main won in an excellent finish. . In the flve-mile scratch race, which was limited to 12 riders, lap trophies were awarded. Hollows led for the greater part of the race and at times

was well clear of the next bunch, comprising Clinton, Hessey and Cooksley. With two laps to go, Hollows cleared away and it seemed as though he would steal the race. But Clinton, finishing in his inimitable fashion, caught Hollows before the straight and held on to win from Hessey and Cooksley. This race was a fitting finale to an interesting and enjoyable meeting. RUNNING EVENTS. 100yds. Senior A: P. Henderson (Wang.) 1, D. Hawke (Wang.) 2, T. Stevenson (Wgtn.) 3. Time, 10.5 sec.
