Bowling Titles

FURTHER RESULTS IN N.Z. SINGLES AND PAIRS

AUCKLAND, Last Night (PA).— J. Pirrett, jun. (Tuakau) and J. F. Benson and T. Ganderton (Balmoral' were the only two liters left in the singles and pairs events, respectively, at the end of the fifth day's play 01 the New Zealand Bowling Association’s championships matches. Both events were concentrated on Saturday on the Carlton Club’s greens, where a large crowd watched the play in brilliant sunshine, though a strong and gusty crosswind made conditions trying for the players. Pirrett, Skoglund (Otahuhu), Taylor (Carlton), Donaldson (Ponconby) and L. Franks (Balmoral? were the two-lifers left in the singles at the start of the day’s play. Taylor easily accounted for Skoglund by 21-12, alter the 19th end. Taylor led throughout and alter lying 17-12 on the 18th end 'clinched the match with a score of four on the 19th.

Pirrett beat Donaldson, 18-12 and Franks lost a life to Forster (Hamilton, a one-lifer. In the next round Pirrett eliminated Forster, while Franks put Donaldson out. Skoglund lost his remaining life to a one-lifer, Gooch (Kahutia, Gisborne). Pirrett beat Taylor 20-14 in the eleventh round and eliminated Rixon (Kia Toa, Hawke’s Bay) in the next game. In the twelfth round Gooch took Tay lor’s second life and Travers (Christchurch) eliminated W. Spurdie (Inglewood), one of the most capable bowlers in the tournament.

After twelve rounds of the singles, Pirrett (two lives) and Travers and Gooch, each one life, are the only players remaining in the singles championship. Pirrett appears a likely winner, having shown remarkable ability in all points, particularly in delicate drawing.

In the pairs Ganderton played only two games yesterday, drawing a bye in the second series. He scored wins over the two-lifer Jones (Kensington, Whangarei) and Pilkington (Otahuhu) by .good margins. Smith (Christchurch), one of the three two-lifers at the start of the day, was eliminated in his first two games. He had a comfortable lead In both against Spearman (Sydenham) and Jones, after the 15th ends, but thereafter scored only one point,, losing 20- and 21-17, respectively. Spearman, one of the favoured skips who lost his first life to N. Donaldson in the fifth round, was eliminated by Pilkington in the tenth round, while the 1947 champion, Exelby (Frankton Junction) was put out by Jones in the eleventh round. Mingins (Onehunga), skip of the champion four last year, is one of the seven skips remaining in the champjionship, and F. Livingstone, No. 2 of the 1948 champion rink, is leading for Mingins. They are a popular pair with the spectators, who derive considerable amusement from the dry repartee which the skip and lead exchange from apposite ends of the green. Seven skips are left in the pairs event. They are: Ganderton (twolifer), Jones, Mingins, W. Spurdie (Inglewood), Macdonald (Hutt), Purdy (Rocky Nook) and Wills (Walton. The last four named have yet to play the tenth-round game. Four days' section play of the fours championship begin tomorrow, with two rounds scheduled each day. Postsection play in the fours is expected to begin next Friday on the “sudden death” principle. All fours games will be of 25 ends each.
