Former Wanganui Man Shares In Baths Rescue
Rescued from the water in the Riddiford balhs, Wellington, in an unconscious condition a 13-year-old girl responded after 15 minutes of artificial respiration. The caretaker of the baths, who rendered resuscitation, was a former Wanganui resident, Mr. Len Smith. ’ The girl, a learner, went under in about six feet of water and war, rescued by some of her companions who noticed her plight. She was the third case of learner swimmers getting into difficulties at the baths in the last wook, said Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith was well-known to Wanganui swimming enthusiasts and throughout New Zealand for his
swimming performances. He held the New Zealand breaststroke championship for 10 years from 1929-39 and represented New Zealand in the British Empire Games in 1934, He originally came from Wanganui, where he was provincial champion about 10 years ago and took a farm at Oaonui, near Okato.
