County Graders Active Since the resumption of work after the Christmas and New Year holidays, county council road graders have been active. During the holidays many county roads became very corrugated and the appearance of graders has been welcomed by settlers. Registrars Appointed The appointment of Mr. Edward Daniel Churcher and Mr. Samuel E. Percy as deputy-Registrars of Births, Deaths and Marriages at Wanganui, is notified in the latest issue of the New Zealand Gazette. Both are appointed deputy Registrars of Births and Deaths of Maoris. Wiremen’s Examinations Of the four Wanganui men who recently sat for the written part of the electrical wiremen’s examinations, all were successful. Five sat for the practical examination and three were successful. The successful candidates were:—Written test: I. E. Collings, C. H. Crimp, J. S. Quirk, R. R. Robinson. Practical examination: R. W. Brooking, R. J. Dawson and F. W. Smith. Weather Affects Flying There was little flying activity at the Wanganui Airport on Saturday, instruction in Tiger- Moths being carried out during the morning when the weather was ideal for flying. A strong south-easterly wind sprang up during the afternoon and little flying was done. Yesterday’s strong wind made flying impossible in Tiger Moth aircraft and no flying was done byclub members. Ball-Point Pens Although the trading banks do not like their customers to sign cheques with ball-point pens, *heir use is not forbidden. The forging of names is easier with a ball-point pen for a signature can be transferred from one cheque to another quite easily. All' that is necessary is to press a moist hand on the signature and then press the hand on the blank form. Week-end Weather

A strong wind which sprang up on Saturday afternoon in the Wanganui district developed into a gale on Saturday night. The only damage was to gardens, radio aerials and fences. The weather yesterday was sunny, but conditions out of doors in exposed areas were marred by a strong wind. The sea yesterday was rough and conditions on the beaches were unpleasant. Virginia Lake Reserve The suggestion that the reserve at Virginia Lake could be improved by the provision of a motor drive around the fringe of the lake was made to a reporter yesterday by a visitor to the city. Praising the beauties of the lake, he said that there were many visitors who were unable through age or infirmity to walk around the reserve and considered thl.it a driveway for motor vehicles would improve the attraction of the reserve.

Camping Holidays The camping sites at Aramoho Park and Castlecliff Beach arc still being fairly well patronised by holiday makers, but the Christmas and New Year rush has now fallen off. During the week-end there were many tents and caravans at the camp sites but the number will now begin to fall off until the Easter holidays in April, when there will be another big influx. The camping facilities at Aramoho Park and the surroundings have been praised by a number of visitors this year.

Leading Croquet Players Leading croquet players from all parts of the Dominion in addition to players from England and Australia will be competing in the New Zealand croquet championships which commence in Wanganui tomorrow. The tourney is limited to players with handicaps of less than three bisques. The main events will be the women's singlos, the open singles, the men’s singles, and the doubles. The tournament will be officially opened by the Mayor of Wanganui, the Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C.

Further Success L. P. Roach, of Waikato, who was successful in winning the Men’s Plate at the New Zealand Tennis Championship, when he defeated M. Souter 12-14, 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in .the final, was the winner of the recent New Year tournament conducted by the Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association. Roach defeated Goodwin in the final at Wanganui, 7-5, 6-0. Partnered with I. Easton (Waikato) he was run-ner-up in the final of the men’s doubles. At the national championships this pair created a favourable impression and were eliminated in the quarter finals. L. P. Roach is a member of a prominent Waikato tennis family.

Sports Instruction Boys resident or holidaying in Wanganui are able to participate in specially arranged cricket games at the Intermediate School grounds, fram 9.30 a.m. to 12 noon today, stated the Wanganui Education Board's physical education officer (Mr. D. D. Beard) Entry fee is two health stamps and this amount will be used for the maintenance of, the gear which has been supplied by the Wanganui Cricket Association Learners will receive special instruction Swimming instruction will be continued this afternoon. Nonswimmers are requested to attend at 1.30 p.m. The Intermediate School baths will be open to learners, swimmers, and those interested in lifesaving, from 2.30 p.m.

Rowing Craft Repaired The Best and Best singles scull belonging to Mr. W. Taylor, a member of the Union Boat Club, which was recently extensively damaged when it was involved in a collision with a Wanganui Rowing Club four near I-latricit’s Wharf, has been repaired by its owner. At the time of the accident it was thought that the boat, which was ripped open in several places, was beyond repair. Mr. Taylor has spent many hours laboriously repairing the craft and it is expected that he will have it ready in time to compete in the senior singles sculling race at the Jury Cup regatta next week. In order to strengthen the boat it has been enveloped in a light fabric skin which will be varnished.
