Batting Failures Marked The Wanganui Senior Cricket Matches On Saturday

Outright Wins For Wanganui And The Marist Teams (By “XAVIER”) Further proof that cricket is an unpredictable game was seen on Saturday when the fifth series of senior matches, played under the control of the 'Wanganui Cricket Association, concluded.

Wanganui, without H. B. Cave, routed T. 0.8., and Marist, without Beard, dismissed United cheaply.

The small scores compiled by T. 0.8. and United could be attributed to poor batting. The bowling was not consistently accurate or hostile. Very few good strokes were played and batsmen were dismissed with mainly bad shots off the occasional good bail and the frequent mediocre one. The only capable batsman on the day was J. K. Glover, who scored a sound 39 for Wanganui. The United-Marist wicket played true. The Wanganui-T.0.8.’s one took spin, but not enough to cause undue concern to the batsmen. The brightest feature of the day’s play was the fielding, which was quite good. Some excellent catches were taken with Bergerson's brilliant onehanded catch in the slips overshadowing the rest. Altogether it was not an inspiring day’s cricket.

The disappointment of this season’s club cricket has been the failure of sides to compile a respectable score if the earlier batsmen have been dismissed cheaply. In due respect, however, this recovery has seemed possible at times, but has been ruined by the impetuosity of a number of batsmen. The Wanganui representatives have shown determination and fighting spirit in two seasons of play, and there seems no reason why it should be absent from club cricket. Results were:—

Wanganui (197) defeated T. 0.8. (97 and 83) by an innings and 17 runs. Marist (148) sdefeated United (78 and 67) by an innings and 3 runs. Points in the championship competition are: Marist 16, Wanganui 14, T. 0.8. 10, United 8. WANGANUI v. T. 0.8. Wanganui resumed their first innings without H. B. Cave, who had compiled an enterprising 68 the previous Saturday. The remaining seven wickets fell for 76 runs and only a competent and confident 39 by Glover saved a collapse. The return of Ibbetson strengthened T.0.8.’s attack, and he finished with 3 for 17 off 11.2 overs.

T. 0.8. commenced them second innings with a deficit of 100 runs. The earlier batsmen, in an attempt to score quickly, lost their wickets and the tail-enders had to go on the defensive. An unusual feature of the T.0.8.’s innings was that a five was run. A batsman forced the ball between widish mid-on and forward square-leg. Assisted by the slowness of the fieldsmen, the batsmen were able to run five.

The majority of .the T. 0.8. batsmen appeared confident against the bowling, but bad stroking resulted in their dismissal. Barnett shaped attractively but was unfortunate to be stumped off the keeper’s pads. Caradus bowled steadily, as did T. Cave. But both of them lacked hostility. Russell was erratic, but he has improved his delivery since the beginning of the season. WANGANUI. First Innings. H. B. Cave, absent 68 G. R. Webber, b Thomas 4 J. Caradus, b Thomas - 53 J. Though a number of the batsmen dismissed themselves, McConway deserves success, because he is a trier till the way. McConway never lets up in his bowling and is the type of player welcomed in most teams. Nitnmo continued his run of club bowling successes by taking three wickets. Beard kept wickets and, as events turned out, he was not required to bowl. United are capable of a better batting performance than they displayed on Saturday. They had actually lost 8 wickets for 36 runs, but Marks and Felts played the bowling more in keeping with its merits. These two, with confident and bright balling, added 31 for the last wicket. Marks has a good temperament, when his

team is in an unfavourable position, and is difficult to dislodge. When playing for Collegiate last year it was his determined batting which prevented T. 0.8. gaining an outright win. United batted ten men. MARIST. First Innings 148 UNITED. First Innings 78 Second Innings. X. W. Condliffe, c McConway, b Nimmo 1 K Allen, b Nimmo 5 A. G. Davidson, c Haise, b Mm Conway 0 W. H.
