Marton District

Rangitikei Pony Club

The Rangitikej Pony Club broke up camp on Friday morning after four very successful days spent on the racecourse.

Children and ponies arrived at the racecourse during Monday from eight of the twelve branches of the Pony Clubs from the northernmost branch of Taoroa to Bulls in the south. In all 83 children entered the .•amp on Monday afternoon. Trucks and cars driven by anxious parents disbursed piles of luggage and bedding into the stewards' stand, which performed the novel and unusual duty of providing sleeping quarters-

Some anxious instructors saw the children very capably fed on Monday night by the Camp Mother, Mrs Haise, and the camp “Aunty,” Mrs. J. Duncan. However, the instructors or the parents need not have worried, as the fare improved from meal to meal until the highest possible standard was reached, consisting of fruit salad for pudding and raspberry cream cake for the instructors’ afternoon tea.

The programme for Tuesday consisted of morning inspection, instruction for C certificates and instruction in the riding school or the manege, and finally some games. On Wednesday morning the children received further instruction in the manege, played games and polo crosse. After lunch children and instructors proceeded mounted and in procession down to the Rangitikei River for a much needed swim.

On Thursday morning the weather, which had been beautiful for the first two days, was wet and windy. Conditions were too boisterous for the children and ponies to take the field. Instead they were given instruction, under shelter, in plaiting manes and tails, grooming and the care and maintenance of gear. After lunch the children wer e all "shouted” a trip to the pictures by the camp commander. In the evening the concert after dinner was even more hilarious than those of the two previous evenings. Badges were presented to those who passed their C and B certificate examinations during the camp. Two boys, Don McCord and Mick Wright, were the first members of the Rangitikei Pony Club to gain B certificates.

Successful candidates in the C certificate examinations were: Margaret Crabbe, Aline Lovelock, Margaret Cannon, Iris Martin, Marjorie Martin, Tom Duncan, Margaret Duncan, Jill Griffin, of th e Tutaenui branch; Bill Simpson, George Simpson, Graham Simpson, Derek Wilson, Janet Haise, Russell McLean, of the Makirikiri branch; Margaret Bull and Pauline Laird, of the Rata branch. Lindsay Smith, Vivian Smith and Richard Bonner, of the Kawhatau branch; Joan Thurston, of Taoroa branch; Heather Lambert, Kay Stewart, Judith Hogg, John Lambert, of Mangaonoho branch; and Allison Duncan, Jacqueline Lourie, Sally Hammond, Cynthia Hogan, James Duncan and lan Coleman, of the PukeroaOtairj branch. Don McCord and Mick Wright, the two successful B certificate candidates, were both from the Kawhatau branch, under the instructorship of Miss Theo Scott.

Instructors and all camp personnel are to be heartily congratulated on the success of the camp and the really efficient manner in which it was run. The only disappointing feature was the fact that owing to the unpleasant weather conditions the parade through the town had to be cancelled.

Camp personnel consisted of the following:—Camp mother, Mrs M. Haise; camp father, Mr B. R. Simpson; camp commander, Mr W. R. Duncan, club commissioner, Mr K. McK. Duncan. Instructors who resided at the camp were: Mrs B. Ful-lerton-Smith, Mrs I. C. Simpson, Miss T. Scott and Miss A. Casey. Other personnel were Mrs J- Duncan, Mr G. Clark, Mr R. Hogg, Mr L. Laird, Miss B. McLean, Miss J. Lambert, Mr and Mrs R. Haise, Miss J. Hammond, Mrs L. Illston and Mr L. Rowe. '

On Friday morning, after hearty cheers for the club commissioner, Mr K. Duncan, and the singing of "Now is the Hour,” the camp dispersed. CRICKET FIXTURES Jan. 15 and 22: Porewa v.
