Wanganui Women's Bowling Fours To Contest The Final

The Wanganui Women’s Bowling Centre's pairs and full rinks tournament was continued yesterday on the Wanganui Bowling Club's greens in Nelson Street. The weather was fine but a strong easterly wind made conditions iiricky at times. The greens were in good condition after the rain on Thursday, but were a little slower. Thef ull rinks tournament was advanced to the final stage, the finalists being Rush, Taylor, Johnston, Dennison (Wanganui) and Edwards, Purnell, Joyce and Pluck (Wanganui).

Two rounds of the pairs tournament were played yesterday, those who scored two or more wins in the section play on Wednesday taking part.

The pairs tournament will be continued today, the morning matches being played on the Wanganui East greens and the afternoon games on the greens of the Wanganui Women’s Club in Somme Parade. Mrs Pluck had a hard tussle against Mrs Dempster in the second round to win 15-13. Mrs Dempster was leading 8-7 on the 12th head ,and increased her lead to 10-8. Two singles and a two placel Mrs Pluck in tne lead, but Mrs Dempser equalised and the score was 12-all on the 19th head. Mrs Pluck scored a single on the 20t’i head and Mrs Dempster the score on the 21st end. An extra end was played and Mrs Pluck scored two to win the game. # The semi-final between Mrs Dennison and Mrs Irwin (Parnell) was marked by determined play by both rinks. Mrs Irwin’s four showed remarkable ability to fight back, and over the last few ends it appeared, that they might be able to snatch victory. A three and a four on the second and third heads gave Mrs Dennison a lead of 7-1, but at the eighth Mrs Irwin had made up the leeway and the score was 8-all. A single on the 12th, a three on the 13th, a single on the 14th and a three on the 15th end, placed Mrs Dennison in the lead 16-9. Mrs Irwin’s rink plugged away doggedly and slowly reduced the lead to 17-13 on the 19th. On the 20th head, Mrs Irwin was lying 6-up, but Mrs Dennison, with a fine bowl, drew the shot to make her lead 18-13. She scored another single on the last head.
