Former Jockey Suffers Injury
The one-time well-known northern horseman, Samuel Henderson, was crushed by a sing of sugar while working on the steamer Broompark at Chelsea, Auckland, last week. During his riding career Henderson built up a splendid record in the saddle, the winter meetings of the Auckland Cup in 1927 and 1928 being memorable ones.
On the opening day of the 1927 fixture he won the Greenlane Steeples on Kamehameha, the G.N. Hurdles on Beau Cavalier, and the Hunt Club Hurdles on Glendowie. On the later days he won the GN. Steeples and Winter Steeples on Glendowie, and was in the money on four other occasions. Twelve months later he was associated with six winners, his successes coming in the Jervois Handicap (Town Guard), Cornwall Handicap (Lomint), Ranfurly Handicap (Gold Krist), G.N. Steeples (Beau Cavalier), Orakei Hurdles (Kamehameha), and York Handicap (Master Doon). On Archibald he was second in both the G.N. Hurdles and Remuera Hurdles. It was when riding Mangaiti in the McGuire Memorial Steeples at Paeroa on March 6, 1929, that he sustained concussion when his mount fell at the brush double and the accident led to his retiring from race-riding, leaving the ranks of versatile horsemen definitely weaker.
