Castlecliff Sea Scouts To Attend Camp At Nelson

Members of the Castlecliff Sea Scout group will attend the Sea Scout regatta camp which will be held in Nelson from January 15 to 22. They will leave Wanganui on January 14 under Group Scoutmaster R. E. Davis. The Castlecliff party will total 19 and it is expected that •350 Sea Scouts from all parts of New Zealand will attend the camp.

The craft the Castlecliff Scouts will use in the rowing events at Nelson left Wanganui yesterday in the coastal vessel Nikau. The craft is a 17ft. drop-keel dinghy, the standard craft used by Sea Scouts in the Dominion. The Nikau will go to Nelson via Wellington and Mapua, but the Scouts have been promised that their boat and camping equipment, which is included in the shipment, will arrive there in time for the camp.

The regatta and camp is held in various centres every two years. The last one was held in Tauranga, and before that in Picton. Those who take part in the camp and regatta compete for several trophies for the different branches of their work, both in the camp and on the water. Crews compete in both sailing and rowing events. This year the Castlecliff group will concentrate on the rowing events. At the last regatta the group’s junior crew put up such a good performance that they now hold the record for the fastest time over a mile in the standard craft.
