SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Miss Kathleen O’Toole, College Street, is visiting Auckland for a few days Mrs. 11. Edwards, Wanganui, has Lett for a visit to Auckland. Miss Ljnette Ellison, Wanganui East, has returned after a visit to Silverstream and Raumati South. Miss Sophie Frankish, who has been visiting her home in Liverpool Street, has returned to Wellington. Miss Muriel Swann, Wanganui, has left to spend the Christmas and New Year holidays in Napier. The residents of Port Chalmers feel they have created a record by enrolling nine sets of twins at one o£ their schools. A beautifully embroidered piece of silk, two yards long, presented by the living Buddha ot Tibet to Mr. Rewi Alley, has been received by his mother, Mrs. C. M. Alley, CZl’istchurch. The person chosen to be Buddha of Tibet must be born at the exact time that his predecessor dies, for it is thought that the soul of the dead Buddha passes to him. Saturday was an eventful day for a thousand Weilington children who v. ere entertained at a Christmas partyarranged by the metropolitan electorates of the National Party. Special buses conveyed crippled and convalescent children, and children of deceased servicemen and from the orphanages to the Town Hall. Mr. J. Sim, Dominion president of the National Party, welcomed the children and thanked all the helpers. Every child received a gift and enjoyed party food, and at the conclusion 2000 balloons were released. The dining-room at the Wellington Railway Station, which has been closed for about two years, opened last week. Because of the labour shortage , it has been decided to adopt the self-carry principle. With 36 tables, 144 people can be seated at a time in the dining-room, but it is expected that all can be served within minutes. Four assistants and a hostess will be all the staff needed in the dining-room itself, to give a measure of personal service.

Pre-Wedding Party. Mrs. Jack Hodge, Arran Place, Upper Aramoho, was hostess at a gilt party on Saturday evening for her sister-in-law, Miss Joan Hodge, whose marriage is to take place at the end of the month. There were about 50 guests present and all spent an enjoyable time with games and competitions. The guest of honour received many useful and lovely gifts.
