Kai Iwi Beach To Be Officially Named Mowhanau
Three months is the time allotted to settlers concerned to lodge objections with the New Zealand Geographic Board if they don’t like the Kai Iwi beach’s name being changed to Mowhanau, its correct native designation. Notice of its intention to change this name, along with the names of a swamp, a gorge, a trig station, a railway station, a township and two rivers in other parts of the Wellington Land District, is given by the board in the current New Zealand Gazette. Mowhanau is described as a postofiice in the Nukumaru survey district which was formerly known as Kai Iwi Beach. . . Other Wellington survey district notifications include the renaming of the Wangaehu River and railway station as Wltangaehu. Furthermore, Turangi is now officially Turangi; in the past its correct name was Taupahi. Elsewhere in the Dominion, tonguetwisting Maori names have been perpetuated. including these: Ngapuketaurite. Pukcangihau, Hinemaiaia and Whatitirinui.
