Italian Battleship May Be Sold For Debt

(N.Z.P.A.—Special—Copyright.! LONDON, Nov. 29 9.5 pm).—The 38,000-ton Italian battleship Vittorio Veneto which was allocated to Britain under the peace treaty, but which Britain has allowed Italy to retain, has been seized for debt by shipbuilders. who claim that a large balance due on payments for the ship's construction are still unpaid. If the c'aim is not met within ten days the judicial authorities are empowered to auction the ship. When the Vittorio Veneto was launched in 1937 she was the pride of the Italian Fleet and considerably tipped the naval balance of power in the Mediterranean in Italy’s favour. She took part in only one naval action —at Matapan—and after the war was dismantled in La Specia Harbour, where she still lies.

When Britain agreed to forego her Maims to the battleship she stipulated hat she should he supplied with an •quivalent quantity of scrap, but did 'ot suggest that this should necesarily come from the Vittorio Veneto.
