MISS BAIRNSFATHER OUTSTANDING WOODVILLE PERFORMER

■ Outstanding performance at ■ urday was Miss Bairnsfat Iter’s w ton Handicap, for which she w; Ballinagh carrying just a little m father confirmed her consistent f wins and a second in her four mo That the form of Miss Bairns-" father impressed the Auckland handicapper is evident from the fact that she has been allotted 8.2 in the big two-mile race at Ellerslie, being on the same mark as Cowper and Kartikeya. It is intriguing to find her conceding weight to such horses as Welcome Guest and Coral Are, but apparently the Auckland weight-ad-juster’s opinion is confirmed by the high esteem in which the Old Bill marc is held by her connections. Miss Bairnsfather is a four-year-old mare by the Siegfried horse Old Bill, winner of the Wellington Centennial Cup, from Fraise, by Potoa from imported Fraisette. bv Valais. She is thus a sister to Valette, sire of the Grand National Hurdles winner The Dozer and the Waverley Cup winner Ngakoti. Bred at Palmerston North by Messrs R. F. Goodman and H. WHenderson. Miss Bairnsfather was purchased at the 1946 National Sales by H. Dulieu at 360gns. on account of Messrs F. A. Cousins, J. C. Bennett, A. E. Hansel and G. V. Simpson, and she is raced by Messrs Cousins and Simpson, for whom she is trained by ' Dulieu at Wanganui. She has won I just short of 14000 in stakes, which | is not a bad return for the original outlayAt the Feilding meeting Miss ! Bairnsfather won the Manchester' Handicap with 8.3 in the saddle, and I she was weighted at 8.13 at Woodville. As the Bolton Handicap was y worth 1390 to the winner, a 51b apprentice allowance was claimed for G. Du.ieu, who has piloted her in most of her successes, and thus she carried 8.8. Miss Bairnsfather had to produce an extra effort to win as she struck a lot of trouble near the home turn. Dulieu had her in a good position half I

a mile from home, where Second Sea' and Batley were ahead of Kippo and Miss Bairnsfather. However, sne was forced to cover extra ground on the home turn and was in danger of being boxed in. It was not till the final furlong was entered on that Dulieu was able to bring his charge along on the outside of Hormuz and Second Seal, and she simply flew over the last 50 yards to win by half a neck. The manner in which Miss Bairnsfather has been finishing on in her races suggests that she has inherited plenty of stamina from her sire, and even if she does not tackle such a race as the Auckland Cup she should win her fair share of long-distance events.

Hormuz ran another useful race but does not appear as so.id as the majority of Foxbridge’s progeny. Second Seal very nearly brought olf a big surprise and his place dividend was just under double figures. He and Alright were the outsiders of the field of 13, and they were third and fourth respectively. In fact, had Alright not been somewhat hampered bn the home turn, he might have been in the dividend-bearing places. He stripped in great form, but the turn in a big field did not suit this longstriding customer. Yasda came home very fast for fifth place and the race should improve him considerably. Kippo and Tremello ran good races, the latter coming from a long way back In the straight. Batley faded out over the last two fur.ongs, and Ballinagh broke down a furlong from the post, just when it appeared that he might go close to winning.
