CONSISTENT MISS BAIRNSFATHER WINS BOLTON HANDICAP

Five do able-figure dividends, two of them exceeding the halfcentury, were hoisted for winners on Saturday at the opening day of the Woodville District eJockey Club’s summer meeting, providing an indication that backers were sometimes astray in their calculations. As there were divisions in two races there were ten winners, and four of them were favourites, making the all-over picture not so 'Jismal as it threatened to be.

Principal event, the Bolton Handicap, went to the consistent ’ Miss Bairnsfather, who was the 1 place favourite, but the open sprint was won by the llaweraowned Travel King, an extreme outsider. Miss Bairnsfather is trained at Wanganui, as also is one of the Maiden Stakes winners, Inverness, and five wins, including that of Travel King, went to the credit of Wanganui riders. | Miss Bairnsfather is trained by H. j Dulieu, whose son, G. Dulieu, was again successful on the Old Bi.l mare. I P. Brennan, who rode Travel King, is ' also apprenticed to the Dulieu stable. In addition, N. D. Lynch, ol Wanganui, rode Trig Point, winner of the 1 first division of the hurdle race; P. i Can oh, an apprentice from D- T. Marks’ stab.e, piloted Inverness in the ! first division of the Maiden Stakes, ' and K. Chote rode the winner of the , second division. The weather was fine and the track I fast. The attendance was good in ! spite of the clash with the Wellington trots, and the totalisator turnover was £39,779 10s, an increase of £2198 10s over last year’s £37,581 for the cor- i responding day. One of the features of the day’s I racing was the fact that the schedule I was adhered to in spite of divisions I in the first two races. The conclud- I ing event was run within five minutes > of the scheduled time, a tribute to J the capable management of the new j electric totalisator and the co-opera- i tion of the club executive. BOLTON HANDICAP Miss Bairnsfather continued her I winning way when she finished with a fine burst on the outside to take the . honours off Hormuz and Second Seal in the Bolton Handicap. Second Seal j lead Miss Bairnsfather, Kippo, Hor- | muz, Ballinagh, Alright and Stony Broke out of the straight and into the | back. The order was much the same j ha.f a mi.e from home, where the ; leading division were followed by Tremeilo and Yasda. Second Seal and Kippo led Batley, A right, Bailinagh and Miss Bairnsfather into the straight. Hormuz then came through I in the middle to head Second Seal, but Miss Bairnsfather joined issue and | got up in the last s(i yards to win by I a short neck from Hormuz, who was a head in front of Second Seal. Alright was a length back, ahead of i Yasda, Kippo and Tremeilo. Ballin- 1 agh broke down a furlong from home and had to receive veterinary treatment. PAID BIG DIVIDEND Travel King sprang a big surprise in the open sprint, the Oete Handicap, leading all the way and paying more than two-thirds of a century. Travel King and Trafalgar Day showed the way early to Franada, Roya. Cambria and Bramerton, and on the home turn Franada and Trafalgar Day followed Travel King, with Rhonddavale, Royal Cambria, Vadoz and Beau Raide next The field spread across the course a furlong from home, but Travel King held on to win by a short neck from Franada, with Trafalgar Day a length and a-half away. Rhonddavale was fourth, with Vadoz, Sorrell and Royal Cambria aimost in line. TWO HURDLES WINNERS Trig Point disputed the lead with Aubrey in the early stages of the first division in the Mangaatua Hurdles and then held off McsaUance to re* turn a double-figure dividend. Mesalliance was on terms with Foxbrae, and the order was much the same into the straight after Mesalliance had made a faulty jump crossing the top. Trig Point held on to win by four lengths from Mesalliance, who was two lengths ahead of Foxbrae, the last -named just beating Magnus Lux. Gold Lad led for the greater pari of the journey in the second division, Result running up to him at the halfmile. Dawn March, held in restraint earlier, ran up to join issue at the last hurdle and then asserted his claim to win by a length from Result. Gold Lad was two lengths back, ahead of Homespun and St. Hilton. MAIDEN DIVISIONS The Wanganui-owned Inverness won the first division of the Maiden Stakes for her breeder, Mr J. G. Alexander, and returned more than a quarter of a century, and the second division went to the Awapuni-trained Ngarobi, ridden by the Wanganui jockey K. Chote- Vitesse and Solnera led the first division eany but Inverness, always handy, ran up to inem entering the straight, ano after that the Coronach mare always held Vitesse safe to win by two lengths. Reflect was a length away, third, ahead of Beauform and Sentimental. Ngarobi assumed the lead in the second division within a ‘furlong and piloted Gay Gordon, Slieve Bloom ana Maelstrom into the straight. Slieve Bloom failed by a short neck to catch Ngarobi, and Gay Gordon was two lengths back, ahead of Glidein, Revered and Pippin. FEILDING-TRAINED JUVENILE The Fei.ding-trained Philamor gelding Recess had a fairly easy win in the Nursery Handicap from the pacemaker, Maranoa, and Red Ruler. When the held had settled down Maranoa led from Miss Andrea and Recess, with Lady Lucina next, Poster, Red Ruler and Service having been slow out from the barrier. Recess challenged at the distance and headed Maranoa, going on to win by two lengths. Red Ruler finished on for third, three lengths away, just in front of Miss Andrea and Spoil Sport, with Lady Lucina next to finish. OVER HALF-CENTURY Finishing strongly, Sparkling Scholar brought off another of the day's surprises when he cut down the favourite, Opalescent, in the final stages of the Mangarawa Handicap and paid over half a century. Leighbony, Lord Croupier nd Rokdale were sow to move, and Sonia and Onalescent led early to be fo'lowed at the half-mile by Pol eta, Sandv Harrison and Bolivar. Opalescent headed Sonia before reaching the straight, but a furlong from home Sparkling Scholar, several places back on the turn, came through along the inside rail and eventua ly won going away. Sonia hung on for third, ahead of Tranquil Gold, Bolivar, Sandy Harrison and Polleta.

ARVASTEP BEATS KATYDID Placegetters in the Borough Handicap were al well supported, Arvastep winning narrowly from Katydid, with Galway Bay third. At the end of o couple of furlongs Cornwall Park was making play from Galway Bay, La Mode'le. Master Crusoe and Katydid, but crossing the top Galway Bay ‘was in front. She turned for homo' first, but Mr Pym, Arvastep and Katydid all issued challenges, and in a good finish Arvastep got the verdict by a long head from Katydid. A length I and a-half away was Galwav Bay. [ahead of Mr Pym, Beau Bijou and (Master Crusoe. I EACH-WAY FAVOURITE I An each-way favourite in S y Ferry won the concluding event at' rather generous odds. Running out of the i straight ad into the back, Samarra. j Lochwinnoch, Comedy Star and Lord I Pilot held command, with Siy Ferry I well back in the field. The favourite ' improved her position along the back, . and when Samarra dropped back I Lochwinnoch took over, being fol.ow[ed into the straight by Sly Ferry, I Aristea, Carter Fell and Legendre. Sly Ferry came on strongly to win by iwo lengths from Lochwinnoch, with Carter Fell a length away, ahead of Aristea and Legendre. Then came i Lochrea and Ensign.
