Democracy Will Take Lot Of Establishing Within Japan

AUCKLAND, Last Night (P.A.)— After nearly three years in Japan as a member for New Zealand on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, Mr. Justice Northcroft returned to Auckland by air, via Sydney.

He said that although it had been originally expected to take only about six months actual sitting time, the time of the tribunal had been two and a half years. Speaking of the political development of Japan His Honour laid the Japanese had been under a feudal system for so long that even in modern times they had not given up the feudal ways. From time to time they subjected themselves to the dominating power in the country and this at present was the case with the occupational force under General MacArthur.

“There can be no hope in Japan of democracy as we know it. for some generations, until the Japanese have been re-educated out of their feudal habit of thought and action,” said Mr. Justice Northcroft.
