Important Cricket Match May Be Played In Marton in January

A decision to suggest to ths TaranaKi CricKet Association that the Hawke Cup elimination match between Rangitikei ana Taranaki be played at Marton on Friday, Saturday ana Monday, January 7, b and IU, was made by tne management committee of the Rangitikei cricket Association at its monthly meeting on Thursday night. Advice was received from the New Zealand CricKet Council that the third challenge for the Hawke Cup had been allotted to the winner of the Taranaki-Rangitikei elimination match, which nad to be completed by the middle of January. Mr. A. J. Thompson (Hunterville) advised the committee that he wouid be unable to act as chairman of the selection committee, and it was decided to appoint Mr. M. M. Marshall (Turakina) to that position. Tne other members of the selection committee are Mr. J. Openshaw (Marton' and either Mr. R. C. Ongley or Mr C. H. Transom (Taihape). Arrangements were finalised for the trial match between North and South Rangitikei, to be played at Taihape on December 4 and 5. The game commences each day at 11 a.m. and stumps wid be drawn at 6 p.m. Correspondence was received from the Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki Cricket Associations agreeing to enter into a competition for the Smith Shield, and acting on Wanganui’s suggestion it was decided to convene a conference of delegates from each association, together with the donor (Mr L. Smith, Marton), for the purpose of drafting rules covering the trophy. This conference is to be held at Palmerston North on Thursday, December 30, on the night of the first day's piay in the Wellington Minor Association’s Possibles v. Probab.es trial match at Palmerston North.

The Karori Cricket Club (Wellington) is to send a team on tour during the Christmas and New Year holiday period and offered a match against Rangitikei at Marton at New Year. In view of the accommodation difficulties at Marton at this period owing to the Marton Jockey Club’s summer race meeting, it was decided to suggest to Karori that the match be clayed against Taihape Sub-associa-tion at Taihape, as the northern association intimated that it was willing to accept the match. An application by the Marton Highland Pipe Band to use the cricket ground for practices on Sundays was declined.

The president (Mr. N. V. Rix-Trott) drew the attention of delegates to the ruling governing first innings declarations on the first day of a two-day club cricket match. The rule quoted was: “In a two days’ match the captain of the batting side has power to declare his innings at a close at any time, but such declaration may not be made on the first day later than one hour 40 minutes before the hour agreed on for the drawing of stumps.”

After considering the representative oerformances for Rangitikei of A. Bowick (Taihape), it was agreed to award him his cap. Permission was granted the High School to play Wanganui Collegiate School at Marton on Wednesday, December 1. It was decided to resume club fixtures after the holidays on Saturday, January 8. The first match commences at 9 a.m. and the Gun Club has extended an invitation to those interested to attend. Morning and afternoon tea and lunch will be available on the ground. The shoot, which is being held on Mr. G. Lampp’s property, Tutaenui Road, commences with a five-bira eyeopener. Stake for the open shoot (25 birds) to follow is £lOO. An optional sweepstake will precede the £5O 15bird trophy shoot, there being four trophies, and another optional sweepstake will follow. If time permits there will be further sweepstakes.
