Miniature Rifle Club Defeats Marton Gun Club By 15 Points

The return match between the Marton Gun Club and the Marton Miniature Rifle Club was tired on the Gun Club's range at the week-end, the home team winning by 206 points to 93. However, the Gun Club’s effort was not quite stout enough, as after the first match a fortnight ago, they were in arrears to the extent of 128 points. As a result of the two matches tired on the aggregate the Miniature Rifle Club emerged victorious by a margin of 15 points. It was later announced that Mr. Roger Simpson had donated a cup for the inter-club shooting match and this will be competed for annually, Tlie first match was fired on the miniature range on October 18, the Miniature Club members scoring 244 points to the Gun Club’s 116. In the second “leg” of the contest at the week-end, the Gun Club scored 206 points to the Miniature Club’s 93 The aggregate scores over the two shoots were: Miniature, 337; Gun Club, 322. Top scorer for the Miniature Rifle Club at the week-end was Jim Fowler, who really put up an amazing performance in securing 13 points. WHEN THE GOVERNOR,. LORD RANFURLY, VISITED MARTON. An interesting group ot photographs taken during the occasion of the visit of the Governor, Lord Ranfurly, to Marton on September 9, 1898, are at present on display in the “Chronicle” window at Marton. One photograph shows the Governor arriving in his coach, passing the Marton Methodist Church in Wellington Road, and preceded by the Rangitikei Royal Rifles. Another depicts a procession with Broadway festooned in greenery and banners stretching across the street with the wording “Welcome to Marton.” From the White Hart Hotel balcony stretches an archway of greenery to the other side of Broadway. The reception at Marton Park is also photographed and shows the Mayor, the late Mr. E. H. The Marton Miniature Rifle Club held a very successful social evening in the Rifle Club hall on Saturday night to wind-up a season crowned with success. Some 50 couples were in attendance and music for the evening was supplied by Mr A. Hammond. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mi Trevor Taylor. At an interval, the vice-president, Mr. W. Rankin, made the presentation of trophies and cups won by members during the season as follow:—A grade championship cup, E. Green; B grade cup, N. Whale; C grade cup, H. Lunn; D grade anonymous trophy, Miss A. Rankin; Gibbs cup, W. Munro; Home Guard cup, N. Whale, runner-up, T. Taylor; J. Hammond’s trophy, G. Lucas; Production Engineering Company’s trophy, N. Whale; Dart’s cup, K. Thomas; cup for most improved shot, Mrs. D. Anderson. Mr. Rankin, on behalf of the “boys,” presented Mrs. Dave Anderson with a crystal dish in appreciation of her untiring efforts as assistant secretary and her keen interest shown in the catering requirements of the club'.throughout the season. HAWKESTONE GOLF CLUB. Members and visitors were present in large numbers for the official closing of the Hawkestone Golf Club on Saturday. A Canadian mixed foursome, played over nine holes, resulted in a tie between Mrs. R. Galpin and L Wilson, and Mrs. Grade and R. C. Ball. At the afternoon tea interval, the president, Mr. R. A. Wilson, welcomed the visitors and presented trophies to the winners of the club’s competitions as follow: - Senior men’s champion, A. Bell; runner-up, R. C. Ball. Intermediate champion, W.
