FAILURE OF FAVOURITES AT RANGITIKEI MEETING

Baekers of favourites had a series of reverses at Bulls on Saturday, when the Rangitikei Racing Club’s spring meeting was marked by the defeat, of every favourite. Two of the winners returned double-figure dividends and four others were just short of that mark. Faultina, improved by her race at Waverley, scored a decisive win the Rangitikei Cup, and Concrete won the MeKelvie Memorial. Weather conditions were ideal, with bright sunshine and a strong breeze, and there was a large attendance.

In spite of the downfall of favourites the totalisator turnover showed a healthy increase, the total handled being £45,682, compared with £38,336 on the corresponding day last year, an increase of £7346. The meeting was well conducted.

The track was in excellent order and the going was not adversely affected by the overnight rain, times being relatively fast. Training honours were well distributed, Otalp and Carterton each providing two winners, while others came from Hastings, New Plymouth, Foxton, Awapuni and Woodville. After Faultina had won the Rangitikei Cup the president, Mr. J. H. Russell, presented to the connections of the winner the handsome trophy, valued at £5O, donated by Mr. W. McA. Duncan, together with appropriate trophies for the trainer and the jockey. FAULTINA’S GOOD PRICE

Ngakoti was a hot favourite for the Rangitikei Cup, carrying three times as much straight-out as Fauitina, but he faded out of the picture after being prominent to the halfmile, and it was left io the New Ply-mouth-trained Fa* Lina to score a clear-cup victory at. lucrative odds. After Night Schoo., Kia Ora Katoa and Ngakoti had been prominent in the early stages Playtos ran up fast to take the lead off Night School at the seven rurlongs and Faultina moved into second place, ahead of Ngakoti, Kia Ora Katoa, Landfire anj Pram, with Barrage and Mister Beau at the rear. Playtos and Fauitina still held charge on the home turn, with Rhodesia challenging on the outer anji Sir Royal and Barrage moving up fast- Faultina had the measure of Playtos at the distance and came away to win by two lengths from Barrage,' who finished fast to beat Sir Royal by a neck for second place. Rhodesia was a close fourth, ahead of Night School, with Bulaselle, Kia Ora Katoa and Playtos next to finish. CONCRETE DECISIVELY

Red Herring was backed for the MeKelvie Memorial as if the race was all over bar shouting, but the Otakitrained Concrete registered a decisive victory at just under double figures from the neglected Franada. Petre Mar jumped out smartly and at the end of a furlong was joined by Colopier, with King of Quiz, Red Herring, Deprive and Franada next, well clear of Gay Stitches and Concrete. The last-named ran round the field as it bunched crossing the top, and entering the straight the order was Deprive, Concrete, Petre Mar and Franada. Concrete hit the front a furlong from the post and held off Franada by half a length. Gay Stitches came home fast for third, a similar distance back, just ahead of Deprive, with King of Quiz, Bonnie Fair. Petre Mar and Colopier next in order. EASY FOR OMAIO With eight scratchings divisions were avoided in the Sandon Hack Hurdles, and Omaio won at just under double figures from the each-way favourite, The Crofter. The last-named attempted to lead all the way, with Voltage and Gynee Lou in close attendance and Omaio handy. Half a mile from home Omaio ran up to the leader and the pair were followed into the straight, by Result, Magnus Lux, Incision, Gynee Lou and Voltage. Over the concluding stages Omaio was doing it better than The Crofter and won by three lengths, with Result finishing on for third, a length and a half further back. Magnus Lux was a close fourth, ahead of Incision, Homespun and Voltage. Becalm lost his rider two fences from home. TRIAL STAKES DIVISIONS The Trial Stakes had to be run in two divisions, the well-backed Opalescent easily beating an outsider in Irish Gold in the first, and Airwyn paying nearly double figures when she just as comfortably downed the favourite, Running Rein, in the second. Opalescent led all the way, being followed across the top by Irish Gold, Ngarobi, Frond and Honev Dew. In the run to the judge Opalescent easily held her advantage to win by five lengths- Irish Gold was two lengths ahead of Action, and then

came Shadoof, Tuatea (who came from a long way back) and Ngarobi. The second division was almost a repetition , Airwyn soon taking the lead to have a break of three lengths on Running Rein, Parlous, Tennessee and Fleurbaix at the half-mi’e. Running Rein was the only one in a position to challenge Airwyn in the straight, but the Airway filly ran on to win by six lengths, with Wave Crest finishing from the rear for third, three lengths away, ahead of Night Valour, Dinard and Parlous. JET PLANE ALL THE WAY Jet Plane proved too speedy for his opponents in the Ohakea Hack Handicap and won easily, but there was a great tussle for the minor honours. With three furlongs covered Jet Plane was making play from Lady Minter, Deseado, Kentucky F.ight and Blue Seal. Deseado ran up to the leader on the home turn but Jet Plane went away to win by nearly three lengths. Fox Flame put in a sustained run to be«jt Blue Seal and Deseado for second place, noses separating the trio. Platonic, Blue Spec and Murrayfield were next to finish. NULLAH NARROWLY Nullah and Foxtonian had a neck-and-neck struggle over the final furlong of the First Parewanui Hack Cup before the first-named got the judge’s decision. Nul*ah and Royal Nuptial led at the half-mile from Foxtonian, Sly Ferry and Lord Bradbury, but Foxtonian ran up fast to take the lead off Nullah crossing the top. In a great duel up the straight Nullah came again to win by a head. Indian Coronet finished from the rear tor third, a length away, and then came Patunui, Lord Bradbury and Terrific, with Reignon last. GRATUITY SURPRISES Gratuity sprang a surprise at double figures in the Second Parewanui Hack Cup when the Battle Song mare easily defeated the well-supported Lochrea. Loyal Camp, Sea Shanty and Lady Oratory led Leyma, Beckon and Gratuity along the back stretch, where Lochrea commenced to move up from the rear with Matara. The lastnamed was actually first into the straight from Lochrea and Gratuity, but Gratuity was doing it best over the last half-furlong to win by nearly three lengths from Lochrea. Matara was a length and a-haif away, ahead of Leyma, Lady Oratory and Battle OnPAID OVER A SCORE Lord Phrosa finished brilliantly from several places back over the final two furlongs to win the Farewell Hack Handicap and return over a score. At the half-mile Vincette, Melite and Sonia led from Helenette, Robert Emmett and Proclaim. Sonia and Vincette had charge on the home turn from Helenette and Robert Emmett, but just as Sonia appeared likely to win Lord Phrosa dasned up and secured a nose decision. Helenette was a length away, third, just ahead of' Übbriaco and Melite, with Perdita, and Robert Emmett next to finish. Details of results:— Sandon Hack Hurdles (Of £310; 11 miles)
