W. DUSTIN’S UNBEATEN 80 MATURES CRICKET OPENING IN WANGANUI

(By “Montpelier”) Apart iront a rattling good knock by W. Dustin, of t inted Old Boys, there was little to enthuse over in the two senior club competition matches which opened the 1948-49 cricket season on Cook’s Gardens, Wanganui, on Saturday. Placid acceptance of every ball as a good ball by the majority of batsmen, and slipshod fielding', made for an uninspiring start. Postponement of play the previous week meant one-day fixtures on Saturday. United took first strike against Technical Old Boys and romped home with a i first innings victory well before time. Only a Harlequin cap stood | between Wanganui and defeat at the hands of Marist, the former side just forcing- a draw. Despite a stiff breeze and a slow outfield conditions were ideal for c ricket. The two teams —United and Marist —which took first use of the wicket, appeared at a distinct advantage, and both were able to declare at the afternoon tea adjournment. The bowlers called the tune from this point, when the ball came through a trifle faster. United reached 162 for the loss of six wickets, Dustin's SO not out eclipsing all performances on th'e day. Lack of concentration spelt downfall for the T. 0.8. batsmen, only Thomas (21 not out! and Brown (111 reaching double figures before .the side was all out for a meagre 67. This gave United a win on the first innings by 95 runs. Last season's competition winners. Marist, pressed Wanganui to an interesting finish. Hard hitting by Nimmo

(34 not out) and Dow (49 not out) boosted Marist’s total to 156 for five wickets, end in reply Wanganui had lest eight wickets for 96 at stumps. J. S. Rumbcld, the Oxford Blue, opened Wanganui’s innings and made a splendid impression with his 44 runs. He nearly carried his bat —which he kept beautifully straight-through the innings, but was out to a hard catch. His was the sole double-figure tally in the side. Altogether, 24 bowlers were given a turn with the ball on Saturday, and it was as well for most of them thatthe batsmen did not have their eye in properly. UNITED v. T. 0.8. Though there was a hint of the unorthodox in his sweeps to leg, Dustin’s unbeaten 80 was as the oasis m a desert of batsmanship. His knock included two sixes, a five, six 4’s, a three, and six 2's, and was compiled in fairly rapid time. He was rarely troubled by the attack, retrieving his side's indifferc.it opening. Davidson gave him most assistance with a vigorous 25. United's trundlers found it easy pickings among the T. 0.8. batsmen, with Felts starting the rout. At one stage five were down for 20. Had Thomas not chosen to put himself in last he might have inspired someone to stay with him. but who is going to ask him to carry the side on his shoulders all the time? MARIST v. WANGANUI Out of form most of last season, A. Dow came back with a vengeance on Saturday with a of crisp hitting which showed what a lot ot gooci cricket there is in him. He hit two sixes—full blooded drives—plus seven 4's for good measure. Nimmo was associated with Dow in a half-century partnership lot the sixth wicket. Both treated the bowling with scant respect, and were particularly severe on . -slow merchants. Even Cave, who worked up a good deal of pace, could not shift the pair, though seven of his 15 overs were maidens. Copybook batting by Rumbold, who opened and was last man dismissed, proved the rock on which Wanganui’s innings stood. He hit live 4’s and a three. None of the, others stayed very |

long. As usual, Marist plant'd their bowling hopes on Beard, and from long spells at the crease he emerged with an analysis of It) overs, 11 maidens, 25 runs, and four wickets. He sent down six maidens in a row. Scores: — Marist. S. Crafar, b Chamley 15 N Wallace, c H. Cave, h Chamley 17 D. Beard, 1.b.w., b Chamley 3 S. Nimmo, not. out 34 J.
