Married Man Drowned When Flat Bottomed Boat Capsizes
CHRISTCHURCH. Last Night (PA) —One person was drowned, and four others and a child were thrown into the water when a small flat-bottomed boat capsized in the Avon River near Bower Bridge. New Brighton, about 4 o’clock today. The man drowned was Gordon John Hammond, married, aged about 40. of 9 Baker Street, North Brighton. Hammond, together with Alexander McAllister, Frank Sinclair, Molly Sinclair, Allen Warren, owner of the boat and Dorothy Sinclair, a child aged three, were going for a trip in the boat up river. II was powered with a small outboard motor which drove the nose under when it. was started. The boat capsized and the five wore thrown into the river. Frank Sind.-iir managed to rescue the child, the water by era a>ing branches of the waler by fiasjing branches, of overhanging willmv trees. Hammond, however, faded b> reach the bank and hi; body wms recovered several hours later by the police.
