Ohakune Man First Sighted Wreckage

OHAKUNE, Last Night ((Stall Reporter). Information supplied to the Royal N-Z. Air Force Station at Ohakea on Thursday afternoon by Mr. VV. R. Relfe, Ohakune. may have resulted in the missing Lockheed being found on the slopes of Mt. Ruapehu this morning. Mr. Relfe, who is a retired bushman, has lived in the Ohakune district for more than 40 years. On Thursday afternoon he was looking at Ruapehu when clear of cloud, after being obscured for several days, when he noticed a speck on the side of the mountain which was definitely new to him. *He was convinced, after his long experience of the mountain, that this was the missing plane. He notified the authorities and also telephoned the R.N.Z.A.F. Station at Ohakea. It was suggested at first that so small an object as a plane could not be seen from Ohakune with the naked eye, but Mr. Relph was told that an aircraft would search the locality indicated by him early next day. The speck seen bv Mr. Relfe on Thursday afternoon proved to be the missing plane.
