Cabinet Approved Of Alterations To Petone Workingmen’s Club
WELLINGTON, Last Night (P,A.) —Authority for the issue of a building permit for alterations to the Petone Workingmen’s Club was given by the Cabinet committee for building control, said Mr. Semple, answering an urgent question in the House ol Representatives today. Mr. C. M. Bowden (N. Karori), quoting reports in a weekly newspaper about the building, had asked for a Parliamentary committee to investigate the whole circumstances of the case.
Mr. Semple said the committee was fully aware of all the circumstances and the scope of the proposed work. In view oi the “exaggera i d and distorted version of the .position' published in the newspaper concerneu, he had had the quantities of materials accurately measured by a qualified quantity surveyor to assure himself that no mistake had been made. The quantity of new materials as measured by the surveyor were: Bricks 1250, cement three tons, reinforcing steel, a quarter of a ton, timber 2000 super feet. The nature of the work provided for more economic use of existing space and the provision of improved ventilation. The granting of this permit in no way contravened the policy which provided for reasonable maintenance and improvements to existing premises. Permits previously had been approved for work for the National Club in Dunedin and elsewhere and other similar organisations where circumstances, as in the Petone case, justified approval.
