Schools Are The Most Beautiful Buildings In California
“Schools are the most beautiful buildings in each town in California, said Mrs. C. Poole, of Los Angeles, Io a gathering of about 440 women at the Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. on Thursday afternoon. , “The equipment is fabulous and the buildings are designed in the Spanish type of architecture, but the standard of education is not as high as that in New Zealand,” she added Before school every day all the pupils salut'e “Old Glory,” and she wondered why the New Zealand schools did not fly their flags. The schools have their own shops for carpentry and the learning of electrical wiring and lighting, and pupils do all their own scenery in art shops and also their cwn stage work. Agriculture and horticulture are also taught. Speaking of the activities and interests of women, Mrs. Poole said that the best types of women are those who work through churches, the Y.W.’s ant Y.M.’s, the parent-teach-ers’ associations, and women’s clubs. Most powerful are co-ordinating councils formed by delegates from other women’s organisations. Cosmetics are used by everyone, mien as well as women. Everyone wants to look young.
“Both boys and girls learn to be beauticians, she said. “This course takes from two to three years. Morning and afternoon teas are not indulged in in U.S.A., but the Americans are always drinking coffee or chewing gum. People In U.S.A, make great use of parks, which have plenty of seals and places to cook meals, with free gas. Sometimes they have night picnics when they have great fun and cook food and eat it. Gas is natural gas from the ground, that comes up with the oil bubbles and is stored in big gasometers, then piped for hundreds of miles. There is so much that they burn torches day and night to get rid of the gas, which makes excellent cooking gas. Electrical equipment is cheap and in the average hom'e there is always a refrigerator and automatic hot water system. Everyone has gas or electric stoves, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, toasters, roasters, and electric razors.
.“There are auto cottages in parks, where travellers can stay at night. On every outside wall is a plug for an electric razor so that a man can shave in his car. The life of the American housewife is much easier than that of the New Zealand woman, and Mrs. Poole described some of the scenic spots, which she said were marvellous. Mrs. R. N. Wilson, who presided, thanked the speaker for her interesting talk. Mrs. Pcrrett sang two solos. Afternoon tea was served.
