Triumph Over Disability. Although she had both hands blown off above the wrists and one eye blinded in a laboratory explosion, Frau Marguerite Rose, of Hamburg, who visited Britain recently lor a six weeks’ course on democracy and the British way of life, has mastered her disability so completely that she can write neatly, use a complicated camera, ride a horse, and swim. Hetskill in adapting herself has been studied with interest by doctors and may help them in aiding British armless cases. Frau Rose had a Kruckenberg operation, which, by splitting the forearm, and complicated skin grafting, gave her two very thick fingers on each hand to which she can lit a number of ingenious adaptors. With these she can wash and dress herself, comb her hair, and darn stockings. She hopes shortly to learn to drive a car. She said she was given the choice of having this operation or artificial hands, but she chose the operation because, although the fingers look ugly, they are of more use for work.
