Immigrant Workers In Wanganui Have Congenial Positions
The nine female and four male assisted immigrants who have been found employment in Wanganui under the Government immigration scheme are in congenial employment and are so impressed with the city that they have had no difficulty in selling down to their new lives, it was reported at a recent meeting of the Wanganui Immigration Wellare Committee.
The immigrants he had met were single and were a fine type who were welcome citizens of Wanganui, said the chairman, the Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C.
The committee was informed by a representative of the Department of Labour and Employment that there were excellent prospects of Wanganui being allocated immigrants from each draft which arrives in the Dominion, provided that suitable private accommodation could be found. The department was continually on the look out for private accommodation but if any employer who desired immigrant labour was in a position to otter or to arrange for suitable private accommodation his prospects of obtaining labour would be increased..
The chairman thought employers would make every effort to help the department and so bring to Wanganui labour to assist in filling the vacancies which could not be filled from local sources.
Three more immigrants are expected in Wanganui soon. They are a man and a woman who arrived in Wellington yesterday by the liner Rangitikei and a man due in the Mataroa next month.
It was explained to the meeting that only single people were brought to New Zealand under the Government scheme so that there was no question of the new arrivals looking for houses which were already in urgent demand.
