Memorial Plaques At Marton School To Be Unveiled Shortly

The unveiling ceremony of the two memorial tablets at the Marton District High School is expected to take place before the end of the present school year. This was conveyed to a meeting of the Home and School Association he.d on Tuesday night. The plaques with the names inscribed of those ex-pupils who gave their lives in the last war, are to be erected on either side of the present Roll of Honour board. The treasurer, Miss P. O’Keefe, said that donations in hand totalled £42 14s, but the cost of the plaques would be £5l. An appeal was made for a further £9 to meet the cost involvedIt was emphasised that all money to date had been raised by public subscriptions’. Funds amounting to £B6 have been collected by the Home and School Association for the purpose of purchasing a sound projector for the school, which was to cost £ll7 10s. The pupils, it was stated, were now making an effort to raise the remaining amount. The school at present possesses a silent projector for screening educational films, but a sound strip is incorporated in the latest films and these are not suitable for a si.’ent machine. The headmaster, Mr. A. Thompson, said it was hoped to open the new six-roomed infant block at the school early next term, and he pointed out the necessity of having a piano for the new building. He made an appeal for funds and with this object in view the committee decided to hold a bring and buy stall at the school on the day of the opening of the new building. The speaker for the evening was Miss Tunnicliffe, the Marton dental nurse, who spoke on the care of the children’s teeth and gave an interesting account of the working of the dental clinic. The association's membership now stands at 70, and an effort is now being made to raise this to 100. It was stated that there were many families who were not yet financial members. An active Home and School Association could achieve almost any end for which it aimed, but this could not function fully without the support of all parents.
