Canada's Atlantic Coast Is To Be Well Fortified
HALIFAX, Oct. 26 (Rec. 6pm). Canada’s east coast, stripped of its i artillery defences after the second world war, is soon to be refortilied with new long-range radar-equipped guns to meet the threat of war, says the newspaper “Halifax Mail.” It adds that old forts in the Halifax area, practically abandoned in the last few years, are to be rehabilitated and re-equipped with coastal artillery on a .scale bigger than ever. Army headquarters in Ottawa indicated that coastal artillery units in the reserve force are to be expanded on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts. The “Mail” says plans for fortifying the shores of Newfoundland are also expected to be included in the scheme.
