RAETIHI NEWS

Noxious Weeds On Crown Land In Borough RAETIHI, Last Night (OC).—The Commissioner of Crown Lands has advised the Raetihi Borough Council that this department is endeavouring to dispose of sections 222-225, Block V, Raetihi, and that there was a probability of a tenancy in the near future. It was considered that if the tenancy were arranged it would solve ’the council’s problem of noxious weeds on the property. The letting of the area will be a source of great satisfaction to the council. Being unfenced and not grazed, the property has been a sanctuary for broom and blackberry over a long period, involving the council in an annually recurring cost to keep weeds in chock. The block is known as “Fern Hill,” and comprises three acres. Health Inspector’s Report. The Health Inspector reported to the council’s meeting that during the month of September he had paid 24 visits of inspection to various premises within the borough. Twenty-one samples of milk and two of water, from the borough supply, were taken for chemical and bacteriological examination. No cases of notifiable disease were reported for the month. INQUESTS. Two inquests have recently been opened by the district coroner, Mr. W. 11. Sandford, but after evidence of identification had been taken they were adjourned sine die. The first was concerning the death of Gwendoline Florence Kent, a married woman, aged 35 years, who died at the Chateau in the early morning of October 20, after an overnight illness. The other was in regard to the death of Mr. Edward Brown, of Horopito. which took nlace at the Waimarino Hospital on October 19 as the result of a .22 bullet entering his face close to the loft eye. Mr. Brown was G 8 years of age.
