Alliance Of Democracies Is Foreshadowed In Union Of West Europe, Canada, U.S.A.

Reactions To European Gesture Seem Favourable In U.S. WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (Rec. 8.45 pm).—Military and diplomatic officials today welcomed the agreement in principle o£ the five signatories of the Brussels Pact to join the North Atlantic Defence Pact with the United States and Canada.

The United States participation in the pact is regarded as assured, although approval by the new Congress will be necessary. Both Mr. Truman and Mr. Dewey have endorsed the assoeiati'/n of the United States with such a pact. American authorities believe that following consultations with the next President, a conference will be held between ali the interested Governments to work out details before t.he new Congress meets on January 3-

I The “New York Times.” in a leader says: “The British Commonwealth i conference’s decisions to sanction Britain’s participation in the Western Union not only removes British hesitation but clears the way for Canadian membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, and should provide a great impetus to boj.h.” The paper says the sooner the democracies act on their plans the more likely are they to discourage any further Russian aggression, and not only safeguard peace but reduce the cost of it.
