Public Response To Wanganui Food Drive Was Poor
“The organisation was good but the public response was poor,” said Mr. C. P. Brown at the monthly meeting of the executive of the Wanganui District Aid For Britain Committee last night. Mrs. J. C. Wickijam said that some of the parcels in her locality had not been collected. She suggested that in future drives that depots be established in the different zones where residents could leave the parcels. In his report the secretaryorganiser, Mr. L. M. Hallas, said the following factors may have been against the success of the effort on the day: (a) Weather conditions (_b) the North v. South Island Rugby match in Wellington; (c) apathy of certain sections of the public; (d) the large number of weekly parcels being sent by individuals.
It was reported that the following gift foods had been despatched:— Wanganui Navy League, 23 cases, valued at £100; Wanganui RS.A.. 12 cases, valued at £45; Wanganui food drive, 10 t valued at £3B l«s; Wanganui U.S.A., 10 cases, valued at £3l 10s; Castlecliff Ladies’ Golf Club, three cases, valued at £ll 10s. The following tins of fat have been despatched: W.D.F.F. (Taihape), four tinsj Lone Scout, G. Bennett, one tin; committee, one tin.
Mr. Hallas mentioned that he had visited both Patea and Taihape and organisations in Wanganui had been addressed. It was stated that Mr. Hallas will attend a conference of secretaryorganisers to be held in Wellington on November 2.
