John L. Lewis' Salary Has Been Doubled

(N.Z.P.A.—Copyright. > NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (Recd. 6 pm).—The United Mine Workers’ annual conference at Cincinnati today voted the president (Mr. John L. Lewis) a 25,000 dollars increase in his salary, bringing his total pay to 50,000 dollars, and making Mr. Lewis the second highest paid Labour leader in the world. Mr. James Petrillo, president of the American Federation of Musicians, is the highest paid, with 54,000 dollars a year. The two vice-presidents’ salaries were raised from 18,000 to 40,000 dollars a year. Executive, board members will receive 1000 dollars a month. The conference rejected a proposal that Mr. Lewis be president for life,, but provided that officers elected in December serve for four years.
