Women’s Institutes

Aranioho Institute.— At the October meeting of the Aranioho Women’s Institute last Tuesday, grandmother’s day’ was celebrated. After the usual business the meeting was handed over to two of the youngest members, Miss Hughes (acting as president) and Miss Georgetti (as secretary). Miss Hughes welcomed the grandmothers and said two great-grand-mothers were unable to be present, Mrs. Wickham and Mrs. Webb-Jones, who were both members of the Aramoho W.I. Mrs. Morrison and Mrs. Atkinson each contributed two musical items, accompanied by Mrs. R. Tizard. Miss Valda Purdy played two pianoforte solos, and Miss Jean Chesswas also contributed two musical items, accompanied by Miss Jean Ross. The programme was arranged by Miss Hughes and Miss GeorgettiThe artists chose music suitable for Grandmothers’ Day; each grandmother received a spray of flowers. A flower show was also held and the various exhibits made a colourful display at the foot of the platform. Entries for various competitions were so large and up to such a high standard that judging was difficult. Results were:—Ginger biscuits, Mrs. Gillum 1, Mrs. Bates 2; teapot holder, Mrs. Halkett 1, Miss 2; best bloom, Mrs. Hamlin 1, Mrs. Hughes 1; tied bunch of flowers, Mrs. Hughes, Miss Hughes 2; sand saucer posy flowers, Mrs. Hughes 1, Miss Hughes 2; sand saucey posy weeds, Mrs. Booth; bunch shrubs, Miss Georgetti. Ngutuwera.— The usual monthly meeting of the Ngutuwera Women's Institute was held in the hall on September 21. Mrs- Muldrock presided over a good attendance of members. Business was dealt with and the treasurer reported that a profit of about £l2 was made at the recent dance. It was decided to send £1 to the lepers and 10s to the Blind Institute, and also to purchase 10s Health Stamps. It was agreed that several good parcels containing dried fruit, be sent to the link at LindseH, Essex, England. Final arrangements were made for the birthday to be held next month, invitations to be sent to nearby institutes and women’s organisations as previously. A roll-call — “What I Like Best in Home and Country”—brought forth various replies. As the talk arranged on “Balanced Meals” was not available, Mrs. Hocken gave a short demonstration on making cellophane hats. Mrs. H. C. Muldrock entertained members with a pianoforte solo, which was beautifully rendered. One member received a gift from the Birthday Box. After a delicious afternoon tea, served by the hostesses, competitions were judged by popular vote. Results were: Posy of spring flowers in marmite jar, Mrs- Hocken 1, Mrs. Sutherland 2, Mrs H. J. Muldrock 3: best blouse, Miss C. Muldrock 1, Mrs. Hocken 2, MrsDenham 3; gingerbread, Mrs. Denham Mrs. Sutherland, and Mrs. Trudgeon equal 1, Mrs. Hocken 2. The National Anthem closed the meeting.
