A. R. Kino WINS WANGANUI GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Finals Played Under Trying Conditions: Course In Excellent Order

Tlie Wanganui epen golf championship, concluded on the Belmont course yesterday, was won by A. K. Kitto (Castlecliff), who beat B. Bainfield (New Plymouth), 3 and 2 in the final.

The tournament was marred by strong westerly winds, which at times made good play difficult. However, the standard of golf was good in view of the conditions. The course was in excellent condition. At the conclusion of play yesterday. the trophies were presented to the winners by Mrs. H. G. Carver, wife of the president of the Wanganui Golf Club. The best card handed in yesterday was by T. Casey, who went around in 72 in the Belmont Handicap. His card read: Out: 45443454 5—38 In: 253 443 4 4 5—34. B. M. Silk, last year’s holder of the title, is at present representing New Zealand at golf in Australia. A. R. Kitto (Castlecliff) had a close run from J F. Collins in the first round on Saturday, the match ending on the final green. Collins played i good. stead\ r golf. On the 18th.. Kitto duffed his second but played his third : to within 18 inches of the hole for a nice 4. B Bamfield (New Plymouth ■ who. with Kitto, headed the quali- 1 fiers. accounted for C. N Armstrong. , 2 up after a close game. J Burns (Manawatu) played stead} 7 golf to , beat V. B. Haworth, 2 and 1. Burns, who went out in 39 had par figures ■ at the first five holes and scored a ■ birdie at the seventh Burns was 3 up at the turn and started home with . two birdies and correct figures at the ! 13th. and 14th and a birdie at the 16th.. gave him 37. , T. Casey, who was runner-up to B M Silk in last year’s tournament found the going hard yesterday and was beaten 4 and 2 by C. L. Cutfield, who missed a number of putts. T. P. Jones (Taumarunui) suffered de- ' feat at the hands of L A Wilson (Castlecliff) in a close game. In the Belmont Handicap, I. A. Ewen (Hutt) suffered defeat at the I hands of F. J. Currie Ewen’s failure to qualify on the opening day : caused something of a surprise Ewen’s trouble was his putting and i it was not until Saturday afternoon that he got back into form again in < this department. Kitto and Whetton provided a hard . tussle in the second round, the match going to the former on the 19th. < green. Kitto was 3 up early in the game but Whetton reduced the lead slowly and at the 17th the match was square. Kitto put down a long drive at the 18th. and his second was in the bunker at the left He played out short. Whetton was down in 5 and Kitto was left with a 12ft. putt for a win, but the ball lipped the cup. The hole was halved At the 19tn. Kitto again sent down a beautiful drive, following it with a second that placed him 15 feet from the pin Whetton hooked his second and was short and played his third to the back of the green Kitto sank his putt for an eagle 3. . J. Bums and A. D Barber were both square in the bogey match played on Saturday morning. Burns winning on the count back R E. Buckeridge was third with a score of 1 down The third stroke competition played yesterday morning was won , by T. Casey with a card of 72-scr.-72. • F. Drew, with a card of 84-9-75. ano C M Gardener. 97-23-75. were equal second. Yesterday afternoon a four-ball beest-ball bogey competition was played. J. Burns and E Fletcher. 7 up. were the winners, with F Wiggins and R Osman, 5 up. second. A stableford competition on Saturday afternoon was won by C Dashfield with a score of 36. K. McDonald and W G. Haggie were second with scores of 35. 1 THE SEMI-FINALS In the semi-finals. Bamfield won the first hole against Cutfield 4 to 6, the next two being halved in 4’s. The next was halved in s’s. Bamfield was down the bank at the short fifth and Cutfield won the hole in par figures to square the game. Bamfield sank a nice putt for a 3 at the next to lead 1 up but when he lipped at the seventh the game was squared. Cutfield had a short putt for a half at the eighth but it lipped Cutfield won the ninth to be square at the turn Bamfield sank a beautiful putt from the c|ge of the green at the short tenth for a birdie 2 and was 1 up. Cutfield was unlucky at the next w’hen he lipped the cup and was 2 down. The next was halved in 4’s, the 13th. in 4’s and the 15th. in ss. Bamfield was against the fence at the 15th and Cutfield. w 7 ho chipped up dead, won in 3to 4 Cut field was stymied at the next to lose 5 to 6. but won the 17th. when he chipped up nicely from the rough at the left of the green Bamfield missed an easy putt for a half. Bamfield ook the next In 4 to win the match 2 up. Cutfielu did not get any breaks in the match Matters were fairly even throughout with Bamfield getting his advantage on the greens.

In the other semi-final. A. R Kitto beat W B. Reilly 3 and 2. The first was halved in 4’s, Kitto taking the next in 4 after both had taken two putts Kitto drove to the foot of the hill at the third. Reilly being to the right and in the rough Kitto’s second was handily placed and he won the hole with a birdie 3 Kitto drove into the rough at the left at the next but made a great recovery with a beautiful third and won with a correct 4. The fifth was halved in correct 3’s and at the next, after two long drives, Kitto was on the green with his second and Reilly was short. Kitto missed a long putt and his second attempt stopped on the edge. Reilly winning with a par four to Kitto’s 5. Kitto sank a long outt at the seventh and Reilly lipped for Kitto to be 3 up. The eighth was halved in correct 4’s Reilly’s tee shot was in the rough to the right at the ninth. He smashed toward the fairway but did not reach it. being still in the rough He placed his third in the bunker and Kitto won with a correct 4 to be 4 up at the i turn. Kitto went out in 35 and Reilly in 40 Kitto’s card was: 4434 3 5 4 4 4. The short 10th. was halved in 4’s. Kitto’s second fouled a branch of a tree at the next and landed in the rough at the right of the fairway. His third ran past the pin and. missing a long putt, he lost the hole to be 3up Reilly won the short 12th with a nice putt. The 13th. was halved in s’s and the 14th in birdie 4’s after both had played nice approaches to within a foot of the pin. Kitto was in the rough with his tee shot at the next but played a nice approach. Reilly was on the green with his first but short putted and the hole w 7 as halved in 3’s. At the 16th Reilly’s tee shot was almost on the French Pass fairway and in the rough. Kitto won the hob* vv:»n a birdie 4 and the match 3 and 2 THE FINAL The golf was not of a high standard in the final, with Kitto never having to extend himself to win He played some excellent shots i.hd never looked like losing A beautiful second at the first hole saw Kitto win with a birdie 4 after just missing hig first putt Bamfield won .he next 4 to 5 and the third was halved in correct 3’s. after both had sunknice putts, Bamfield’s being about 25 feet.
