ELMDALE BEATS SPRING FASHION AT WANGANUI TROTS:

Backers of favourites had a losing day on Saturday when the Wanganui Trotting CfUb’s opening day was marked by the' defeat of all each-way favourites, with four of the winners at. double figures, one of them returning just on four score to straightout backers. Though Christchurch stables provided winner and runnerup in the main event, the Wanganui Handicap, with Elmdale and Spring Fashion, five winners came from the I strong Auckland contingent. Heavy showers which ushered in the morning boded ill tor conditions later in the day, but the weather cleared and the meeting was held in bright sunshine, with a drying wind which | improved the track throughout the day. Under the circumstances there was a i»,ood attendance, and the club did weh to enjoy an increased totalisator turnover, considering the downfall of well-backed runners. The day’s figures were '£22,560, an increase of £682 10s over last year's £21,877 10s for the corresponding clay. The Berkett bracket, Max Grattan and Spring Fashion, was a strong rancy lor the Wanganui *iandicap. but the Addington-trained Elmdaie beat Spring Fashion handi.y. After Petite Direct and then Max Grattan had made the early pace Spring Fashion ran up fast to lead witn six furlongs to go, but Elmdale had followed ner througn and was just ahead i of Max Grattan and Petite Direct. Running for the straight Spring Fashion held command from Petite Direct and E.mdale, but the lastnamed challenged in the straight, took the lead at the furlong and went on to win by a length and a-half. Spring Fashion was two lengths ahead of Murray Grattan, who got up in time to nose Petite Direct out of third place. Then came Staveley’s Lad, Fan Tan and Airswept. CHEDWORTH LASS AT A FRaCE Backers tried to get even on the last event, the Morton Handicap, but this time the Berkett bracket finished ouside the money, Cnedworth Lass winning at a price not far short oi a score. After the field had been recalled for a false start British Machine set out to make the pace and was followed down the back by Dusky Princess, Petite Direct and Tu Rangi, with the favourites well back. Dawn Princess and Airswept headed British Machine at the hali-mile, but Cliedworth Lass moved up to follow Airswept and Petite Direct into the straight. She then ran to the front to come on for an easy win from Saveley’s Lad, who got up to beat Petite Direct for second money. Spring Fashion was fourth, ahead of Hey Dey, Airswept and Impartial. THUMPING DIVIDEND The Palmerston Nortn-owned and trained Sirius sprang a surprise in the opening event to return a thumping dividend. She was always hanuy whhe Neonapolis maae the pace and then ran to the front half a mile from home to be three lengths clear ot iNeonapoiis and Cyone Man on the home turn. In the run to the judge Sirius was easing up to win by two lengths, with Cyone Man hak a length in front of Scots Fusi ier. Then tollowed Courtesy and Nelson’s Sword. The well-backed Ennola won tne first division of the Aramoho Handicap after following Prince Belwin and Marypark to the straight, but she was run to a neck by the fastunishing Scott Wrack, with Marypark a fair third and Prince Be*win and Billy Boy next. Gay Warrior led all the way to win the second division from an outsider in Erndale. Red Emperor came home well lor third, ahead of Local Lady and Bronze Royal. Prince Gaillard returned a good double-figure dividend wnen he scared a rather comfortable win in the Eastbrook Handicap. Gay King led Devadus, Fifcid Marshal, Josie Grattan and Prince Ganlard at the six furlongs and then Josie Grattan ran to the front to lead round the turn from Devadus, Grasmere and Prince Gaillard. The last-named finished solidly to win well by two lengths, with Gay King half a length in front of the bracketed Field Marshal and Fontaine. Several runners were quickly out of the race when Master Dorset swung round at the start and interfered with Loyal GiObe, Tyrone Power, Old Scotch and Alimony. COMPLETED DOUBLE A penalty of 24yds. did not deter Sirius from winning the President’s handicap at her second start, and the Josedale Dictator mare thus completed a double. Titoke was 20 lengths clear at one stage but then compounded, Cyone Man taking over in the back stretch. Sirius steadily improved her position to cut down the leaders in the straight and win by three lengths. Alltrue beat Indian Wilkes by a head for second place, with Scots Fusilier and Tantamount next to finish. . Parrish Mills led practically throughout in the first division of the Victory Handicap to beat Robie's Direct by half a length, with a gap of eight lengths back to Beau Raider ~md Clayteen. Bill Thorpe fol.owed (he leaders, Overdraft and Colistus, in the early stages of the second division and then ran on solid.v to hold off Regency’s challenge. Overdraft was half a dozen lengths back, third, with Isinglass and Cornelius next. Tyrone Power returned a rather generous dividend when he accounted for the opposition in the Foster Handicap. He ran into the lead half a mile from home and stalled off challenges from Liliaceae and Old Scotch, who had fo.lowed him into the straight. Fontaine was a fair fourth, ahead of Field Marshal and Ayisha. Details of results:— RUTLAND HANDICAP (Of £150; 4.0 Class, 1 mile. 5 furlongs'. 14/15—Sirius, It., D. W.
