Rccd. 6 p.m. New York, Sept. 13. The Dupont Company, Wilmington, Delaware, announced today i that it has begun the commercial production of titanium, a little- ■ known metal that is less than twice as heavy as aluminium, but ! several times as strong. Silver white in colour, and J highly resistant to corrosion, : titanium is one of tile most plentiful of all minerals, but it dif- ’ liculta to refine from ores and j previously has been little more • than a laboratory curiosity. The j Dupont Company believes one | major use of titanium will be in j jet plane engines, and perhap, j, even the bodies of ultra high- j speed aircraft. Duoont experts • say it may also prove especially I useful for printing presses, textile | machinery, and other equipment j, wherein a combination of light weight, great strength, and cpr- ! rosion resistance is desirable. j, Dupont said unalloyeTi ductile ’ titanium is comparable to stair.- , less steel in strength, but weighs only a little more than half as imuch.
