Probation Granted For Theft Of Money

After pleading guilty in the Magistrate’s Court, Wanganui, yesterday to a charge of stealing £l5, the property of Frederick John Harris, at Bulls, on December 31 last, William Argent Perreau, upholsterer and truck driver, aged 28, was admitted by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., to probation for 12 months, a condition being that he make restitution.

I Detective-Sergeant H. A. Hay, who 'prosecuted, -old the Court that for i five weeks oefore December 31 acidised was employed as a gardener at 'Bulls and shared a cottage with the complainant, Harris. On December 131 accused left his emp’oyment with'out notifying his intention to do so land without, collecting £3 in waves I which were due to him. From a wallet belonging to Harris accused took ithree £5 notes. Actual y, there was more money in the wallet than that, .but accused took only £l5. He frankly admitted the theft when interviewled by the Wanganui police on Monday.

Detective-Sergeant Hay added that, accused was a returned soldier and airman of World War 11. He was in receipt, of a small war pension which he had failed to collect since November of last year. Admitting accused to probation, the magistrate said he would give him a chance to rehabilitate himself.
