TAIHAPE NEWS

SICKNESS AFFECTS SCHOOLS (O C.) Taihape. June 27. A seasonal epidemic of l sickness is affecting many people at present, particularly school children. On Friday 140 pupils were absent’from the Taihape District High School BOXING AT UTIKU Contestants at the recent boxing tournament at Utiku came from the three Taihape gymnasiums and Utiku, and Mr. O. Gibbons, the well-known Marton trainer, brought tip' a team. Mr. Clyde Thomas ot Oliakune was the third man in the ring for all the bouts, and his verdicta atjd ability earned for him warm awM'eciation. Mr. Thomas also presented a trophy for the gamest loser, which he awarded to Ray Jones. The four two-minute-round statbout between V. Simcox (Marton) and B. Mclntosh (Taihape) ended early in the third round, the Marton lad gaining the verdict on a technical knockout and winning the handsome trophy presented by the Utiku Boxing Club.

Mr- J. Dillon of Utiku presented a very attractive challenge cup for competition between the various gymnasiums, Mr. Colin Gregory's gym. with five points proving the winner. Bouts resulted: — J. Shaw. 5.13 (Gregory's gym. Taihape) drew with Pat Devlin, 6.3 (Utiku); C. Lett, 6.5 (Walker's gym. Taihape) beat Jack Potaka. 5.3 (Utiku); Ron Keating, 6.12 (Gregory's gym ) beat Ray Jones, 6.10 (Utiku); Les Wilson. 10.8 (Utiku) beat J. Hamilton, 9.11 (Walker’s gym); L. Devlin, 7.7 (Utiku) drew with Ivan Gabolinscy, 7.0 (Utiku); T. Adams, 8.13 (Marton) lost to J. Marchiqni. 8.10 (Utiku) in one of the best contests of the evening; L. Montgomery, 7-8 (Marton) gave a very good display to take the verdict from E. Troon, 7.1 (Gregory's gym); In a no decision bout a very good exhibition of boxing was given by Jim Keating, 8.1. and T. Fields. 7.8, both of Gregory’s gym; P. Sinclair. 6.0 (Gregory's) beat lia Potaka, 5.8 (Utiku); G. Cox. 13.3 (Walker’s gym) knocked out N. Hussey, 120 (Utiku) in the third round Of a bout which proved most entertaining tor the fans. Although Cox was about 181 b. heavier than the local smithy, he made a very nervous debut in the ring, and Hussey knocked him out of the ring about three times in the first two minutes. Hussey’s steamroller method of rushing his opponent created much amusement, but his wildly delivered haymakers lacked direction and generally landed everywhere except on Cox. who also lacked any scientific fistic ideas. In the second round Cox managed to place several punishing blows to Hussey’s head, and just before the gong Hussey, who lacked condition, was groggy. Earlv in the third Cox landed a solid left to the side of his opponent's head, and that was that: B. Finn, 9.0 (Clarkson's evm. Taihape) knocked out R. Marchionl. 9.0 (Utiku) in the second round: V- Simcox. 10.3 (Marton) proved too good for B. Mclntosh, 10.2 (Gregory’s) in the star bout. NEW TELEPHONE AMENITY

Workmen from the Post and Telegraph Department have been busy over the past few weeks erecting a new telephone line to the Omatane district, where it will give the soldier farmers on the Awarua Farm Settlecent a connection with the Taihape exchange. Party lines in the country districts are becoming heavily congested. and further new lines are necessary to relieve this congestion. Shortages of telephone wire and other materials appear to be the cause of delay in erecting further lines
