SEVERE’QUAKES ROCK JAPAN; HEAVY DAMAGE

Recd. 1 a.m. Tokio, June 28 Three severe earthquakes rocked Japan this morning. Heavy damage is reported but no casualty figures are available, as communications are disrupted. . The newspaper ' Asahi said Fukui, capital of Central Honshu, with a population of 44,000, was virtually wiped out. At Taishoji, in Central Honshu, 900 houses are reported to have been demolished. Kyoto News Agency said the only buildings still standing in Fukui were the Prefectural Office ,nd the radio station. Many fires are reported to be raging there. Buildings swayed in Tokio, Kobe, Osaka, and KyotoThe Osaka Meteorological Bureau said three quakes struck at 7.12 a.m., with the centre estimated at Miyazu, about 40 miles north-west of Kyoto.
