Leave To Go As A Labour Delegate To Islands Refused

(P.A.) Dunedin, June 25. The Transport Committee of the City Council has refused to grant special leave to the president of the Dunedin Tramways Union (Mr. W. B. Richards), one of two # members of the delegation appointed* by the Federation of Labour to go to the Cook Islands. Mr. Richards and Mr. K. Baxter, secretary of the Federation of Labour, have reserved berths for the Maui Pomare’s next voyage to the islands, wherein they were asked by the Federation to report on industrial conditions. When advice was received from the Transport Committee that application for special leave was declined the executive of the Local Tramways Union met to consider the matter. The executive announced yesterday afternoon that it considered Mr. Richards should make the trip- It added that it would take full responsibility for anything happening as the result of Mr. Richard’s going to the islands without leave. Mr. Richards will leave this morning for Wellington.
